digger1914 Posted February 16, 2020 Share #21 Posted February 16, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) FWIW I tried both the standard and black chrome versions, and ended up going for the standard version. I preferred the built in hood, and most of all, the focus knob. It's just muscle memory I guess, but my finger looks for the focus knob. And like most people seem to, I placed the metal cap in the box it came in, and just use the plastic one.
Advertisement Posted February 16, 2020 Posted February 16, 2020 Hi digger1914, Take a look here 50MM APO and 35MM Summicron ASPH II.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted February 16, 2020 Share #22 Posted February 16, 2020 Different strokes... I prefer the wider and fully knurled focus ring and its action, possibly due to the brass assembly. And the aperture ring is tighter with more noticeable detents. Small details, but personally rewarding. The trade off is lack of retractable hood. I would also likely opt for the normal plastic cap that I use on all my other lenses. Of course all this is far secondary to the optical performance. Can’t have it all, it seems. Feeling inadequate with the regular old version. Thankfully I have the 50 Lux BC to keep it company. beautiful camera porn BTW, nice combo.

I don’t use mine, I think the filter is plenty of protection. Edit: I just checked the lens, the filter is inset from the lens rim so the cap isn’t gripping on the filter. Nonetheless, I recall the cap fitting snuggly even with filter. I don’t have the cap with me to try out.. sorry, again. Welcome, dear visitor! For the money I am spending on the APO I want something a bit more heavy/brassy. I can deal without the focus tab.

I think the LHSA version in black was black paint, or are you getting the follow up Leica version in black chrome . Both are gorgeous!
Jeff S Posted February 20, 2020 Share #34 Posted February 20, 2020 LHSA version was limited to 300 black paint and 200 silver chrome. These were sold quickly, but might be found reselling at a nice premium. https://www.reddotforum.com/content/2017/11/leica-introduces-apo-summicron-m-50mm-f2-asph-lhsa-special-edition/ The subsequent limited edition black chrome version is matte black; still with brass assembly, but so far limited to 700 pieces. (The 50 Summilux black chrome was supposedly a limited edition, but that has gone beyond initially committed amounts.) Jeff
jakontil Posted February 21, 2020 Share #35 Posted February 21, 2020 The silver chrome LHSA is great actually, but from where i live obtaining such limited lenses is almost impossible
IkarusJohn Posted February 21, 2020 Share #36 Posted February 21, 2020 I have the original silver chrome (brass) 50 Summilux ASPH, and as Jeff says, it’s a keeper. I also have the limited edition black chrome APO Summicron (not the black paint LHSA edition), with the red and white lettering. I like the old school lens cap so much better than the self ejecting plastic jobs - it baffles me why Leica makes such awful lens caps. The SL caps are truly terrible. However, I digress - I keep the lens hood on the APO for protection. There’s no trouble screwing in a filter if you need to (the thread is well recessed inside the hood clip, which goes outside the lens barrel). That said, I use Leica, Heliopan and B+W filters, and they do not sit proud of the end of the lens (as shown in Elan’s photo above). However, if your filters have a wide flange (haven’t actually seen any like this, but who knows), then they might clash with the lens hood. You obviously need to remove the hood to screw in the filter (it might be possible otherwise, but fiddly). Mostly, when I need filters, I use either Lee or Firecrest filters, so no hood. I haven’t seen any scratches or marks on the front of the lens barrel from using the hood. You do need to line it up carefully to get it to fit - it’s exact. Hope this helps. Welcome, dear visitor! Jeff S Posted February 21, 2020 Share #37 Posted February 21, 2020 (edited) I now own one of these as well, and look forward to using it on both M10 and M9M. The dealer made an offer I couldn't refuse (so I tell myself). The ergonomics are much nicer than the standard version I rented, except for the clip-on hood. Still haven't decided whether to use the hood or just a filter (picked up a B&W XS-Pro nano filter to experiment). If flare is a problem, then the hood will definitely stay on. Good to know that it hasn't scratched the barrel with regular use, unlike reports of brassing with the black paint LHSA version. I agree that the lens cap is cool...but doesn't work if the filter stays on. Jeff Edited February 21, 2020 by Jeff S

When it was released my usual Leica dealers (including Marina from the Wetzlar store) all said my chances of getting one are slim to none. So I wrote a dozen Leica stores expressing my interest. Two weeks later the Leica Los Angeles store manger called to say he has one coming the next day. I whipped out my credit card right there and then. Great lens, and I will keep it forever, even though I currently don't use it that much (I shoot mostly with 35mm these days).
