Just acquired vintage Yashica 1000mm f11 mirror lens ... tested today with Panasonic S1R, lens supported on fork mount ... lens fitted with additional 'wrap around' astro telescope hood to improve contrast ... An ebay lens acquired for £125 ... Lens' primary mirror has slight silvering degradation to perimeter but a mere fraction of the mirror area is affected ... so no detriment to imaging. S1R image stabilisation works well when combination is used on Novoflex fork mount ... stabilisation set to 1000mm ... ISO 800, 1/320 f11. Plan to use the lens to photograph a pair of Peregrine Falcons in residence on a local church steeple / tower. Above image is my neighbour's TV aerial approx  50 feet distant from my garden ... not cropped

Another S1R / Yashica 1000/11 mirror lens test image ... Manual Focus lens ... S1R magnified live view ... lamp post 21m distant (measured with Leica laser rangefinder) ...  ISO 1250 1/400  f11  ... IS 'ON" set to 1000mm ... lens supported on Novoflex fork mount / Gitzo tripod

Bokeh might not appeal but lens appears to be sharp enough for intended Peregrin Falcon project ... and it offers a means of using an ultra long focal length lens in a busy town centre ... where a regular 800mm telephoto or long focus lens would hinder pedestrian traffic.

I have to say, that bokeh is very distracting. It's like smudged finger painting! Is this a characteristic of mirror lenses in general?

Depends on the subject and lighting ... Boheh is not so important if a mirror lens is the only practical means of obtaining a particular photo
