What is your personal impression of the Sigma 100-400 and the Panasonic 70-300? I believe you own both? Thanks in advance

Hi, yes I have recently purchased the Sigma 100-400 (again) mainly because Sigma had a cash back offer here in the UK up till the end of May and in the end I couldn't resist🙂.

My impression of the Sigma hasn't changed really from when I had it first time round, if you get a good copy (mine seems ok), it's a useful lens, I find the weight and size quite manageable and there are times I prefer it to the 70-300 just for that little extra range.  I think I just wanted to see how it does on the S5II with PDAF, so far I'm happy, even though it's a hair slower than the 70-300 and IMO the Panasonic's a tiny bit better IQ wise.

I'll probably keep both lenses, they have different purposes for me and there's the TC option for the Sigma.  Ideally I would like to replace the 70-300 with a 70-200 2.8 that's smaller and lighter than the Panasonic option, similar to the RF Canon, one is rumoured to be coming from Sigma.

I only own the Panasonic 70-300 and never used the Sigma, but it's a fantastic lens I would highly recommend. It's also a quite capable at shooting macros, and fulfills all my needs in that regard.

Quite handy to be able to stand a bit further back from these two hooligans when they come at you out of the water😄 S52 Sig 100-400 +1.4 TC

Here is one...taken with the Panasonic S5 and 90mm SL APO Summicron.  this was taken at the US Naval Academy Blue Angels air show on the Severn River during their annual graduation and commissioning week.

I have since upgraded to the S5II - a terrific camera (the S5 is also great but the improvements at the incremental expense were too good to pass up).  To keep these aircraft in focus, I ditched the subject recognition and tracking settings - I simply used a central zone focusing area on continuous focus..this image was taken at just over 1/1000 of a second...in a large print, you can see the crisp surfaces of the F-18 aircraft.
