Hi Geno,

I am just wondering where you shot "Roped"? Obviously on an Obstacle Course, but was it Military, Police, University, maybe random group of Masochists! :-)

I like the image a lot, not sure of the cropping or angle of view, but the it did really catch my eye as I perused the Thread.

Thx

From the other side -

I'm still getting used to rangefinder Leica, I find I've been cropping more tight (in view finder) All are full frame - basic post production processing

I'm still in love with the way the M8 captures color "depth" or feel

Hello JCrutcher,

very nice images - especially the first one! It has a wonderfully ominious quality to it as well as great aesthetics and composition. Well Done.

Query: What's your 'real world' assessment of the CV 35 f1.2? Either in General or Specifically on the M8.

I 'know' I'll be getting an M8 once I've gathered my funds (many months to go-sigh), but haven't chosen any lens or lenses yet. At least not with much certainty! Some input on the 'fast' CV35 you're shooting with would be kind of nice.

Thx

Thank you. Both were spur of the moment as I was driving home. The second one is actually thru the windshield with slight cropping. To answer your question about the lens. I always carry 2 bodies, the M8 and either a M3 or M6 so I try to carry lens that cover the range I like between both camera's. The CV 35 1.2 is my favorite on the M8, next is the Leica 24 Elmar and then the Summicron 50 (new style). In addition primaraly for the film I'll bring along a Zeiss 21 OR a 75mm Elamarit.

The 35 CV gives me what I want it's sharpness and colors plus it's fast so if I want limited DOF I have it on both bodies. Since Arizona is sunny most of the time I'll carry 2 ND filters for the 35 (52mm) a 3 and 6 stop. I usally load the film with 800 speed so the ND helps there also to shoot wide open or close to it. Hope this helps. by the way I think the M8 is underrated, it's a steal on the used market and you it's a fantastic camera.

Thanks for the Feedback J.,

I hadn't considered carrying ND filters on a regular basis, even with my dSLR or SLRs before. I've used them to reach for looooooong shutter speeds for moving water and waterfalls and such when the aperture is already small and my shutter still wasn't slow enough for my tastes.

I agree with you in regards to the M8 being under rated in todays market. I think it's price will also take a further beating if Zeiss ever can get a dRF of their own onto the marketplace and shake even more M8's loose from upgraders and give 'full frame forever' folks a further excuse to NOT buy the 1.3x M8. Bully for them! Cheaper for Me!

Jeesh! the antiquarian R-D1's are STILL holding a 1.5K-ish price point and the LOADS Better M8 is only 1K more, from the looks of my eBay research, and that's without ANY competition from Zeiss or CV coming to market against the M9. If Zeiss makes it's move (Contax anyone!) anytime in the next 12 months I bet the price drops enough to pay for a CV35 f1.4.

Thanks

Richard in Michigan

If Zeiss makes a move it will all depend on the quality of the images the potentially new camera can produce. The M8 continues to be in a class by itself, it has a particular stamp and those of us who love it, will stick to it.

Ola, Wilfredo,

the inherent image quality of whatever 'Zeiss' may or may not come up iwht in a dRF would definitely be an important factor, but not an absolutely determinative one, I suspect anyway. If peak image quality was that overwhelmingly important, the Epson R-D1 cameras and their antiquarian (by digital standards) imaging pathway wouldn't be holding such a strong residual value on the aftermarket.

I would argue that there is no denying there is a substantive RF Market Segment who can't afford Leica Prices - see the success of Voigtlander & Zeiss and their less expensive cameras and lenses (sometimes markedly less expensive). While there are definite ceilings on how many cameras someone could ultimately sell to these folks, if any 'new' dRF becomes available with a competent focus mechanism and competent imaging chain will find ready buyers. A) because it's a 'New' vs 'Used' equation, B) Less Expensive than M9, C) Either a High MP or Full Frame option (or both) versus the M8/RD1 and their "lower" specifications.

I frankly will be getting an M8 whether Zeiss makes it's foray into the dRF Market or not. Even if I win the MegaMillions Lottery and get an M9 and full Leica Lens Kit - the M8 will be purchased.

I'm into Infrared Photography and I wish to explore how the M8 does as an INTENTIONAL Infrared Camera along with exploring the aesthetics and processes of Rangefinder Imagery. Other than some limited 4x5 View Camera work, I've been an SLR guy all the way. I see great merit in the RF Viewfinder and Focusing System for some of the things I like to shoot.

I do NOT carry a Negative opinion of the M8, I understand it's strengths, it's weaknesses, and the engineering choices which lead to some of the things it's sensor does with Infrared Light. While those choices ultimately went 'ka-boom' on them when the wild and wooly internet discovered it's 'Crisis du jeur' in the matter, I don't think the decisions were inherently wrong.

Peace Everyone

Richard in Michigan :)

A photograph, I have taken on my way to work, passing by a just opened hair salon.

Will she be the first customer of him today ?

"first customer ?"

I don't get tired of the old Noctilux. This is unique, every other lens has been removed after a few weeks from the camera.

It is just such a great all rounder, as it is a magical night glass ;-)
