Being new to the V Lux I was wondering if users are shooting RAW or JPEG, I’ve been shooting just RAW at the moment but it seems a waste of the camera’s technology to ignore all the settings that are available for JPEGs. What’s other users favourite settings with this camera.

Geoff, good morning from Los Angeles!

Have two of the 114's and shoot both RAW and JPGs. I've tried the gamut vis a vis the JPG settings and ended up using the Monochrome, Panorama, and the two Backlit presets for a lot of work, obviously depending on the subject matter. They work well, IMO, but of course we can all achieve similar or identical end results with a post processing program, and a lot more so after having shot RAW instead.

So I'd say that it's horses for courses:

if you have a good computer and Silkypix, Lightroom, Photoshop or other post-processing program, and you want to spend some time in the "digital darkroom" side of things to get the best out of your digital negative, then RAW is the better bet for you;

otherwise, if you're going to wi-fi or otherwise instantly post your shots without having to go through post-production outside the camera (analogous to the 1-hour happy snap foto-lab approach of yore), and you like the JPG presets, then I'd say go for it - they are way better than decent.

I've gone both ways and both ways work for me. Presets for quick and cheerful, and RAW for deeper digs!

Geoff, I mostly shoot Raw and have that as my main profile assigned to C1. Occasionally it is useful to explore other functions which are only available as Jpeg. So C2-1 is set to give me that facility. It is quick and easy to switch from one to the other, as needed,.

Initially I shot RAW+JPEG with the 114, but found that with correct exposure the JPEGs were more vibrant and had more clarity than the RAW files. Of course this depends on one’s post processing skills, but since I liked the JPEGs so much, I have since stopped shooting raw.
