Finally, a touch of white. What good is winter without snow?

Excellent portrait. Was this done at one of his workshops?

Yes, summer 2021 in Maine.  He didn't like it because his head was bisected by the horizon line.  One of his fundamental principles is to have the subject either entirely above or entirely below the horizon line, even if there is no terrestrial horizon.  I first saw his work in 1973 - the Newfoundland story for National Geographic - and it had a profound effect on my view of photography.  I've been trying for years to get into one of his workshops and finally made it off the wait list - then Covid hit, so I had to wait another year, but it was well worth it.

In this case I have to disagree with him. I really like the portrait. I've never felt there were hard, strict rules that always had to be followed with respect to composition. If it works, it works.

Like you, I've been a longtime admirer of his work going back to his early days with Nat'l Geographic. His photograph of pears ripening on the windowsill at a Moscow hotel is one of my all time favorites.

Ha! This made me laugh out loud. As a longtime admirer of Abell's who has watched many of his lectures, I try to follow the horizon line rule and don't always succeed. It's perfect that he critiqued the photo this way.

I think it's a lovely, solid portrait, and never noticed that the horizon cuts across him. Only discovered him a couple of years ago, via the youtube video of his talk - The Life Of A Photograph. That video had a big impact on how I think about composition.
