margolis Posted August 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just go a mint M7, certified and warranted by Leica. Got it on Ebay, was very excited until I tried to use it in auto mode, and it will not work. It's on it's way to Leica now. Has anyone had this problem. I'm disappointed only in that this is my first film try in 6 years, I'm a digital guy, and excited about the process once again.

You cannot make of the mechanical M Leica an electronic version! The M7 is a 'trouble' camera !
Lucklik Posted August 6, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 6, 2007 In fact the M7 is a bad camera! You cannot make of the mechanical M Leica an electronic version! The M7 is a 'trouble' camera ! ???????? I have a M7 and M6TTL both work fine. I haven't problems with the M7. I prefer the shutter release of the M7, it is a little harder compared to the M6. stunsworth Posted August 6, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 6, 2007 In fact the M7 is a bad camera! You cannot make of the mechanical M Leica an electronic version! The M7 is a 'trouble' camera ! What nonsense. By that token the M6 is a bad camera too because it has a meter.
Joop van Heijgen Posted August 6, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 6, 2007 What nonsense. By that token the M6 is a bad camera too because it has a meter. Because you are 'lucky' with it, it is a good one!? The meter of the M6 has nothing to do with the mechanical shutter!

margolis Posted August 6, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted August 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the spirited debate. I, since I'm new to Leica, can not comment, but I'm very excited about using the camera. The issue is that when in the Auto mode, the shutter speeds do not displayed in the viewfinder, and the shutter can not be released. I hope Leica repairs this swiftly so I can test the theories. luigi bertolotti Posted August 6, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 6, 2007 Ehm, maybe a stupid question, but seems you are new to Leica... how is the BATTERY ? You say the M7 is mint, warranted... yours can be a serious problem... but I suspect the behavior with an unoperative battery would be exactly the one you speak of... margolis Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted August 7, 2007 I wish the battery was the case, I changed two sets, same result. It's off to Leica...
xrogers Posted August 7, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 7, 2007 My M7 has been reliable and a pleasure to use. The M7 is an excellent camera, and I think you'll enjoy it once it returns in good working order. --clyde

Total rubbish. Have owned the M7 for close to 5 years with absolutely no issues. Bruce, I hope you get yours back soon! Jan
Kasimir Posted August 7, 2007 Share #14 Posted August 7, 2007 Sorry boys, but I had to give back my M7 also. Same problem as the O P described. Nobody here could give me a sufficient answer on my question: why? After the third repair in the first 9 month of ownership (new camera, no ebay) Leica "kindly" gave a MP on my request. So, find out if your M7 is a lemon quickly and pay attention You can still give it back to the seller. Don't listen too much to those who say: "I never got any trouble with my M7, how dare You?" If Your camera causes You trouble, what does this help You? And don't make the same mistake as I did to think "It's a Leica, it's gotta be perfect" too long. Nearly all my equipment (all new) was at least once, many three times to the KD in Solms. When I told this on this forum I was teared and feathered. Till one person admitted that the same happened to him, too. Be warned, those guys here are "believers", Zealots! Kasimirus Apostatos

doubice Posted August 7, 2007 Share #16 Posted August 7, 2007 Be warned, those guys here are "believers", Zealots! Kasimirus Apostatos Kasimir, I started using Leicas in 1966. I went through a IIIb, M3, M2, M4, M5 without any problems. When the M6 came out I bought it immediately, against the 'advice' of many Leica 'experts'. I still have this M6 and it has never been to KD in Wetzlar / Solms or the SD in New Jersey / Allendale. I bought the M7, also against the advice of the same 'experts' and guess what....... - I still have it and it has never been opened due to a breakdown. It did go to New Jersey to get the MP finder upgrade a few years ago. To round it all off, I now use an M8....... Am I a believer? Am I a zealot? You bet I am. bill Posted August 7, 2007 Share #17 Posted August 7, 2007 There are good cameras, there are bad cameras. I have an M7. It's my second one as the first went back to Leica with a battery problem within 2 weeks and was promptly replaced. I haven't had a moment's problem with it since. The sweeping generalisation that it is a "trouble" camera is simplistic rubbish, and on a par with "four legs good, two legs bad" Regards, Bill
andybarton Posted August 7, 2007 Share #18 Posted August 7, 2007 Early ones had DX coding problems too, didn't they? IIRC, these were soon fixed under warranty. The old adage of never buying anything when it's a new model holds true for Leicas as well as it does for cars. Let some other early adopter iron out the wrinkles and buy then go and after 9 months. earleygallery Posted August 7, 2007 Share #19 Posted August 7, 2007 I think that this is more to do with buying from e bay than any problems with the M7. Mechanical/Electronic items do go wrong, be they cameras, cars, TV's, washing machines.......... You don't say who you bought from but I would have gone back to them first off. I think e bay is a good opportunity for people to offload stuff they know is faulty, classic signs are "I don't know anything about cameras so please don't ask technical questions" or "selling for a friend" or the classic "sold as seen" (works ok if you can inspect what you're buying first to satisfy yourself of its condition, but not from a photo on the internet). OK, there is a chance that something could be fine when sold and develop a fault in transit. At least you have the warranty, so hopefully the problem will be resolved quickly for you. sdai Posted August 7, 2007 Share #20 Posted August 7, 2007 It must be one of those certified pre-owned Leicas from a dealer as indicated by the OP, if that's the case then it should go back to the dealer first. I also bought the M7 against experts' advice ... I actually jumped straight from the M3 to the M7 and got three of them, one 0.72 chrome (already sold) and two 0.85 blacks (still in use) ... I have always set them to AUTO and never had a single problem, the only services I've ever needed were the VF upgrade and the replacement of M3 style film advance levers.
