Photos By Cowz Posted January 8, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 8, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, after getting the medium format bug, I ditched my M10 and started using a Hasselblad X1D and 45mmf3.5. Great rig but slow glass after using Leica and Voigtlander lenses. Blad is now gone and I am now waiting on a M9 Monochrom (new sensor 10K shutter and pristine) with a 90mm sumicron (non APO version). My questions are.... coming from the M10 which made me lazy (learnt rangefinding on M8) how difficult will focussing the 90mmf2 be? Also, am I correct in saving coin by not using the APO version on a mono body? I have read the 90 cron is a high performing lens and love shooting portraits in B&W so hoping this combo will sit in my boudoir bag. My daily driver is a Fuji GFX100 plus 110mmf2, 120mmf4 macro, 45mmf2.8 and 12-64mmf4. This is a Fuji image, I hope to do better with M9M and 90 corn. Welcome, dear visitor! romanus53 Posted January 8, 2020 Share #2 Posted January 8, 2020 ok, I'm shooting color but had the non-apo, tried the apo and came back to the previous. The apo is slightliy "clearer" on f2 but not that much to my eyes to justify 2K-plus on the price-tag. Nailing the focus depends on adjustment of the lens to your body, all my 90mm are back in focus and I had no problem shooting with the 50 Summilux at f1.4. Wellcome back to some light-weight equipment!
otto.f Posted January 8, 2020 Share #3 Posted January 8, 2020 (edited) I don’t know very much about the 90 Summicron but used it a few times and own the APO (and the M9M). For portrait purposes the APO might be less ideal than the nonAPO. But that’s of course dependent on what kind of portrait style you are into. If it is like Anton Corbijn’s portrait of Miles Davis, than the APO would suit you better. The latest Elmarit 90/2.8 can be even harsher. Focusing is also quite personal, you can find quite some members here who have difficulties there. I have seldom problems, especially when I use the loupe 1.4x or the HongKong 1.25x but I must say that with the M10 there never was a fault. jaapv Posted January 8, 2020 Share #4 Posted January 8, 2020 At any rate focusing will be easier than on the M8, provided body and lens are both properly calibrated. You will be pleasantly surprised by the non-Apo version, as chromatic aberrations are less visible on a monochrome sensor. If the lens is uncoded, have Leica code it; it will be calibrated at the same time and they will clean any haze off as well.

Not sure how you are expecting 90 ‘cron to improve on image you posted. You might get her bum out of focus at f2 ,but is that an improvement? Be aware lens extremely difficult to focus at f2 and needs camera and lens calibration to be spot on. Be aware that Leica charge 350€ for coding and any other cleaning and adjustments will be extra. There are cheaper options
jaapv Posted January 8, 2020 Share #6 Posted January 8, 2020 Indeed there are. On the Monochrome which draws deadly sharp, I would consider the Voigtländer Heliar 1.8 75 a superior portrait lens, with its classic rendering.
