P-n junctions are the work horse of semiconductors. CMOS detectors use a derivative, as does the processing engine making sense of the number of photon-hits/s.

Sorry for the confusion. I posted the image (and the text) on Twitter and many in the community simply 'hate' digital. I was clarifying the situation in case of confusion.
