LordCho Posted December 16, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 16, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is anyone else using Amazon Photos to store their Q2 DNGs? After uploading, I'm seeing some files be "corrupted" with banding, incorrect colours, blocks of artifacting, etc when previewing them on the computer or mobile app for Amazon Photos. Is this just the fact that Amazon Prime does not automatically apply software image correction like it does in Lightroom? There is distortion and vignetting visibly present. Advertisement Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 Hi LordCho, Take a look here Amazon Photos - corruption or profile adjustment? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Leica Guy Posted December 17, 2019 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2019 I never heard of anyone using Amazon Photos. My very best advice is go get a top quality post processing program that’s guaranteed to correctly process the DNG’s from your camera. Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, Capture One, DXO,... You’ve invested a lot of money and purchased a really capable camera. Excellent post processing will help you realize the best images you’re capable of. Good luck! JonPB Posted December 17, 2019 Share #3 Posted December 17, 2019 I think you're seeing a problem with their preview generator that automatically reads the DNG and processes it into a JPEG. You can download a sample DNG to another location and test to see if it is corrupted, which I doubt it will be. It might help to contact their customer support, as they might be able to fix this on their end. But, if you're like me, you'll find that their service is cheap in both cost and quality, and decide that it isn't worth it.
bags27 Posted December 17, 2019 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2019 (edited) A number of years ago, when it was first offered, I used Amazon to store photos--and they were much smaller, as they came out of a 12 mps sensor. About 6 months ago, I downloaded some and discovered what you also experienced. I'm not sure why it happened, but fortunately I haven't uploaded anymore in a couple of years. Vov Posted December 17, 2019 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2019 Yes I’ve experienced the same. I backup all my photos to amazon but errors don’t bother me much since I rarely use it to browse/pull from. It’s my second backup essentially which is a crazy good deal if you already have prime. I don’t understand the comment that you don’t care if there are errors. I would think if it’s a backup worth using then you’d want it to preserve all the detail of the original. I must be missing something obvious.

nicci78 Posted December 17, 2019 Share #8 Posted December 17, 2019 I also use Amazon Photos to back up my photos. Unlimited storage for Prime members. Very nice deal. But website is a mess and the desktop app is too simple. However, colours are off when display on the website. Files are ok when downloaded then open in LR It is just a super cheap online backup.

Thanks. I understand now. Looks like it works. I have a SmugMug website acct and place all my best photos on it at full resolution. Jpeg’s. This is my last level of backup if all my HD’s fail. I use a multi-level backup strategy and so far after 15 years, no problems. Fingers crossed always!!
nicci78 Posted December 17, 2019 Share #10 Posted December 17, 2019 Amazon photos allows RAW & jpg files backup. And it is awesome for the price.
LordCho Posted December 17, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted December 17, 2019 Thanks for the replies. I'm exploring a cloud based workflow and this is one platform that is already paid for with my Prime subscription. From what I'm seeing in the replies, it appears to be a pure rendering issue and shouldn't impact the actual file (which would be pretty bad for Amazon). I'll test actual copies but the whole LR CC workflow on iPad can be pretty frustrating with the numerous cloud storage platforms with which to punt data around... LocalHero1953 Posted December 17, 2019 Share #12 Posted December 17, 2019 Can you automatically sync between your local catalogue and Amazon Photos? And if so, does it keep your file organisational structure?
Leica Guy Posted December 17, 2019 Share #13 Posted December 17, 2019 Does Amazon mine your photos? In the crazy world we live in, I would not be surprised.

I haven’t tested it yet since I just batch uploaded everything I have so far.

I have a friend who’s sunset photo of Horsetail Falls in Yosemite went around the world to Asia and back and he actually saw it 18 months later in a listing for sale. He did not have it copy righted so there was little he could do and frankly it wasn’t even a huge deal to him, but it was surprising.

My guess is he never registered the image. He was not very concerned about it being used by others. He was not making a living with photography. Thanks. Your explanation make sense.
