shinyphotos Posted December 16, 2019 Share #1  Posted December 16, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was wondering if anyone knew the thread for the inside of the lens hood. The lens itself has a 55mm thread and I have a 58mm filter that is like to use. The 55 to 58mm step up rings that I’ve tried aren’t able to clear the inside diameter of the hood. I don’t use the lens cap on this lens very much. When I’m out shooting I just leave the hood extended. I’d like to do the same but still use my 58mm filter. Do you have any ideas about possibly threading something into the threading of the hood itself?
Advertisement Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 Hi shinyphotos, Take a look here 90mm APO Summicron - I need some filter help.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted December 16, 2019 Share #2 Â Posted December 16, 2019 The hood has no thread and putting a filter on it can only add flare to your lens. My advice FWIW, forget filters if you can or put a regular 55mm one on the lens. Happy snaps .
shinyphotos Posted December 16, 2019 Author Share #3  Posted December 16, 2019 I shoot with the M246 Monochrom so colored filters are nice to use sometimes. If it were a color raw file then I'd probably agree with you. As it is, however, this is the issue I face. My hood has what appears to be threading on the inside. Perhaps it's not threading but instead some sort of light scattering scheme?  Welcome, dear visitor! JonPB Posted December 16, 2019 Share #4 Â Posted December 16, 2019 If you run your fingernail along one of the ridges in the hood, you'll find it isn't a screw thread at all. You're right that it is designed to minimize reflections into the lens from the hood itself.
shinyphotos Posted December 16, 2019 Author Share #5  Posted December 16, 2019 Thanks for that confirmation. I’m going to try another couple adapters to see if I can manage to get the filter and step up ring inside the whole hood. If it were a simple colored filter I would just buy a 55mm one. The filter I’m using only comes in 58mm. This is an anamorphic bokeh and flare adapter. There isn’t any glass.
JonPB Posted December 16, 2019 Share #6 Â Posted December 16, 2019 Ah. Perhaps stacking a step-up ring, your filter, and a generic hood would work -- leaving the built-in hood collapsed?
mmradman Posted December 16, 2019 Share #7  Posted December 16, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Built in hood is shallow, I suggest 55mm filter or if you have bigger filters use step up ring and screw in lens hood with the same thread.  I use 55mm contrast filter for same lens and camera but also practice additional screw in lens hood.  Depending where you live or shop these are freely available, either eBay or other. I use Heliopan screw in metal hood.
