I have one too and just for information - the Panasonic one for the S series is not identical. And I have strong doubts, that the cable release for the SL 1 can be used through any adapter.

Not sure how the pin connection is for the SL2 release. At least it is now regular 3.5mm jack, but when I tried to use the Fuji remote release (2.5mm jack) with 2.5>3.5 mm adapter, it did not work.
Looks like it is still proprietary connector...

Hello,

Thanks for the info!

Has anybody figured out what the pin connection is?

I need to mount the SL2 on a motorized panorama head, which automatically takes the photographs.

Hello everyone, thanks for all the advice. I have had contact with Leica. Thomas Schmidt was very cooperative. Leica advises not to do it yourself. The computer can be disrupted and the warranty will also expire !!! I finally bought a new one. For € 90 I do not want to take any risks. For do-it-yourselfers, I can still say that it must be a 4-wire plug. The question that is still running at Leica is whether I can use a 4-wire extension cable or not ...

This is one area where Leica is persistently blinkered

Why they cannot use a proprietary connection system so you can use one of a selection of 3rd party releases with remote capability, timers and intervalometers beats me. They certainly cannot be doing it to make money on their own crappy, overpriced release, as the profit generated must be miniscule.

These sort of things really make you despair ...... Leica spend millions designing and producing high end lenses and bodies then cripple them with poor attention to small but necessary things like flash and connectivity.

The configuration of the single jack is not universal. I tried firing it with my Pocketwizard Plus IIIs but had not been successful to trigger remotely even the transmitter & receiver showed signals received by each other.

likewise, I tried. Sigh .....

I have talked with Leica support today. He basically told me that it's a 4 pole connector.

Later I have talked with the Dr. Clauss company, who is the producer of my motorised panorama head, if they have a working solution for the SL2.

They told me that this cable should work: https://buy.dr-clauss.de/de/home/159-kamera-auslosekabel-panasonic.html

I hope it will!

As soon as I get the camera, I will try this out.

That cable appears to 3-pole connector (TRS), the SL2 uses a 4-pole connector (TRRS).  I ordered some male 4-pole connectors and will try to figure out the connections.  I have the original SL remote cable and can use that as a reference.

You are absolutely right. Leica uses a TRRS instead a TRS cable.

I have rechecked the cable, which Dr. Clauss recommended and it is a TRS to TRSS cable, which should work with the Sl2. The product photo sadly only show the TRS connection sharp. The other one is the TRRS side. Dr Clauss states compatibility for the Lumix DMC-GH4, which also uses a TRRS socket. I will verify it, as soon as I get the camera.

It comes to my mind that Rode is offering a TRS to TRRS transversion cable to use TRS microphones on the iPhone (TRRS). Maybe this could be useful for us too.

Adapter: https://www.rode.com/accessories/sc4

Conversion Cable: https://www.rode.com/accessories/sc7

@elviskennedy thanks very much! Please keep us posted on your findings!

FWIW, it's not just Leica. Olympus has done the same for years and, if I recall correctly, Canon as well (probably others).

My father used to say, "The great thing about standards is that there are so many of them."

  • 3 weeks later...

Purchased the new remote release after trying to Hotwire my own release for pano photography and they’ve gotten sneaky. Those resistors in there? Any thoughts on how to get this thing reverse engineered?

It is Not the right cable. Dr. Clauss was wrong. They offered me to make a cable for 170 €, which I find too expensive.

Anybody has had luck with getting an adapter to work?
