I trust Gordon over anyone else on this board. To me his confirmation is enough to conclude that the SL2 finder isn't as sharp as the low-res finders under magnification.

I have deteriorating eyesight (reason I left rangefinders) and I shoot with fast M glass, so this is the final nail in the coffin. I'm staying with the original SL.

Well I thought I'd have a look, even though I won't be using M lenses often on the SL2. I quickly compared to my Z7, A9, A7R3, SL, and S1R. I do not own a A7RIV.

The S1R and SL2 images are definitely not as crisp as the same magnification in the lower res finders. OTOH I had no issue achieving consistent critical focus with any of them at any distance. Nor did I feel it was easier or more difficult or faster or slower on each of the cameras.

The only thing I came away with is why didn't Leica include the option of a picture in picture magnification like Fujifilm does?

Storm in a teacup, me thinks.

Gordon,

I was pleasantly surprised that using the SL2 magnification display to check the pics I took revealed much more details where in the past with SL, I could not determine focus well till I downloaded pics into my Macbook due to the lower resolution finder that showed grainy display.

Although the EVF is lower resolution when it’s magnified, the rear LCD looks to be displaying proper resolution in magnified live view.  The rear LCD looks sharper than the EVF in magnified mode, the LCD is as sharp in magnified live view as it is when reviewing/magnifying past photos.

One big issue though is that you can not AF or even capture a photo while in magnified live view.  As soon as you half press the shutter, it reverts to 1x live view.

It’s hugely helpful to me pick a magnified spot on a subject, then half press the shutter to AF-S on that spot (as with Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Fuji, etc.).  the picture in picture zoomed in view with Fuji and Panasonic would be nice but I don’t see it coming to the SL2.

I don’t think a firmware fix will solve these issues.  Id hate to think this is a processor limitation here.  There’s no way Leica didn’t see this issue in beta testing.  The beta testers who review the camera have said online they reported the issue.  Yet Leica did not expand the limited capabilities of the live view focusing.  They even spec’d  the sensor’s special micro-lenses for M lenses.  Yet they didn’t do anything for EVF focusing capabilities with these lenses.

On a side note: when you half press the shutter in: Manual mode/film type: monochrome/af-c, the sceen flickers back to standard full color exposure preview.  I think it’s because, likewise, the processor can’t handle continuously previewing the exposure and simultaneously applying the monochrome film type.

I do it the other way around, focus, press the top front button for magnified view to confirm the focus point is where it’s intended, then press the shutter to take the shot.

I used to think the same thing.  I have two copies of the same SL lens and shot the S1/R side by side with the SL2 in order to see which single point AF works more reliably with SL lenses.  I had a couple of misfocused/back-focused pictures with the Lumix bodies inspite of what the picture in picture showed me.  The SL2’s single point focus with SL lenses was always pinpoint accurate.  I set Pre Focus to ON which I love.

I much prefer Leica’s implementation to all the other FF bodies I’ve used.  You must have a faulty copy of the SL2.

A good strategy for static subjects! (although my ring finger seems to prefer the lower front button, so I have rather assigned the magnification to that button...).

Is this also true comparing to Leica SL?

Shocking!!! People reporting the same issue. Yeah... all the SL2 copies are “faulty”.

what is the firmware version of your SL2 ? the one i played with for a few hours was firmware 1.01, didn't seem to have this EVF issue in MF with M lenses

Interesting! I have FW 1.0 - as installed in the body purchased on Nov 21 - so recently installed by Leica. FW 1.01 is likely an intermediate update for a newer batch of bodies leaving Leica.

Yes... in PLAY mode... EVF is crisp and clear (like the Q2). The issue is in SHOOTING mode.
