The literature for the M to L adapter recommends not using it on an L mount camera to adapt any Leica M lenses that have greater than 11mm lens’ protrusion behind the mount.  It then gives a list of approved lenses, I guess with a shorter rear protrusion than 11mm.  

My question of the forum gurus:  will it physically damage my SL2 sensor to use a non-approved Leica M lens with this adapter? Does the rear lens protrusion impact the SL or SL2 sensor?

i saw the 28 Summilux was not on the approved list, neither was the 75 Summilux.  My 2 favorite Leica lenses unfortunately.  Before I mount them on the SL2. I wanted to ask whether I am at risk of damaging my brand new SL2 if I use these lenses with the M to L adapter.

It will either hit the sensor or the surrounding baffles. I guess there is a safety margin, but it wouldn't be sensible to go against the advice! Remember that the protrusion is at its maximum at infinity.

Just because they are not on the approved list doesn’t mean they protrude too far. Have you tried simply measuring them?

from my experience in the past, the lenses that protrude too far are mostly vintage lenses and collapsible lenses.

i would definitely measure them first

My measuring tape just doesn’t get down to Millimeter accuracy.  Def not enough to bet a few thousand dollars camera sensor on lol!

Good point! I’ve used both a 75 and 28 Lux on an S1r with the novoflex sensor.  But I read somewhere (can’t find the dang article now!) that the Novo M to L adapter is larger than the Leica one, thus it can handle all lenses.  I’ll contact support, but I doubt they’ll give me any good direction if I want to use the Leica M to L adapter on a non-recommended lens.

I think I saw that article on Sean Reid’s site.  @sean_reid do you know of this issue?    @jonoslack have you heard of this issue before?

Even the cheapest rulers are measured in mm

If you spent just a little effort you would quickly see most modern lenses are well within tolerances...but you could always just email support if in doubt. Personally id just pull out my kids $3 school ruler and verify the protrusion depth :) 

Ive only encountered one lens that was even questionable.

But first, have you even mounted the two lenses in question to the L-M Adapter? do either protrude past the adapter itself? Because if they don't your concerns are resolved.

I would think your 75mm Summilux is recessed inside the adapter, not the other way around.

EDIT:

Just checked all my M lenses and not a single one even protrudes 1mm...they are all recessed behind the adapter. (24mm and 35mm Summilux, 50mm APO Summicron and Noctilux)

11mm is .43"...thats pretty significant, you would be able to notice this without a tape measure. Even my 24mm Summilux is recessed, so I think both of your lenses should be completely behind the adapter.

Cor - well, I hadn't read this, or even thought about it. I don't have the 75 'lux, but I'm certain it wouldn't be a problem (like my 75 APO it doesn't protrude at all).

I've checked my 28 Summilux (which I've used a lot with the SL2) and it's still behind the baffles and contacts for the adaptor - and it goes to infinity without touching anything either. 

I really really don't think you should worry about either of those lenses.

Thanks Jono, that’s great to hear.  I appreciate the response.  If you’ve used it without issue then I really have no concerns.  Great review as always, really spot on with my (admittedly short time) use of the camera.  

@digitalfx :  I was worried some part of the sensor would move forward through IBIS and then collide with the lens, into the adapter past the plane of the adapter’s contacts.    Or else the shutter mechanism or some other part could move past the contacts.   I have no idea really, but I take caution due to the obviously high price and unknown complexities of the system.  There’s much more to it than just grabbing a kids’ ruler and finding the 11mm mark.

Both mentioned lenses can be found on the approved list.

I guess Leica is just lazy updating the list (The M-Adapter T was released in 2014).

Some newer lenses are listed on the bottom of the list, some are still missing (28 Summaron, 75 Noctilux) but they do work perfectly fine too.

I have used it several times on the SL1 with no problems, I reckon that the flange distance cannot have been changed in the meantime

The 75 Summilux has a huge recess too on the mount-side of the lens.  Thus I was very surprised too that it wasn’t on the approved list.  I thought there must be some complexity unknown to me.  Either way, I am glad to get an experienced answer on this forum though, as the 75 and 28 Lux are my 2 favorite Leica lenses.

The 75 Summilux is on the approved list for the M-adapter-T provided by Anickpick above, and it can be 6-bit coded. Am I missing something here?
