Although it does show some folk think beyond the perplexities of our cameras some of the time...
Advertisement Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Hi Piers, Take a look here M8 Firmware Upgrade. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted August 7, 2007 Share #22 Posted August 7, 2007 Piers This is one of the strengths of this forum - sometimes threads go off on a tangent, and sometimes folk disagree with another's viewpoint, but we all (generally) move on smiling to the next one. Piers Posted August 7, 2007 Share #23 Posted August 7, 2007 Piers This is one of the strengths of this forum - sometimes threads go off on a tangent, and sometimes folk disagree with another's viewpoint, but we all (generally) move on smiling to the next one. I know of no other internet community like this one Don't think I disagreed with anyone's viewpoint, Andy; and I've enjoyed some of the banter that scatters the threads (even some of the grumpy stuff); the threads are often informative and supportive, just there is a sense sometimes that one is listening in to someone's private conversation without intending to. My comment was a gentle nudge in the direction of sympathetically/humourously (obviously too subtle) pointing this out in this case: i.e. it seems our healthcare systems could do with an upgrade and our forum members do have to contend with real life beyond the confines of this aimiable virtual fraternity (if that's not too gender-oriented a term). I too spent time in a NHS hospital last year: dedicated staff, under-resourced (I donated as much as I could afford when I left to the ward equipment fund)--but also I saw the same cloth used to clean tables and fruit bowls as had just been used to wipe up catheter overspill... "Revenons aux moutons" (?): the firmware upgrade on my M8 went without problems, still not overimpressed with high iso performance, write speed of DNG improved though; • would like option to display clipping on full screen preview full time (as Nik D200), • and the option to diplay preview DNG as monochrome without having to clutter up card space with jpegs (my former RD1s did) especially as the technically competent in another thread, if I understand, say there is a hidden jpeg in the DNG file for the preview function in any case). wlaidlaw Posted August 7, 2007 Share #24 Posted August 7, 2007 Piers, I believe it may be a PNG thumbnail not a JPEG hidden within the DNG. Wilson
ttriolo Posted August 7, 2007 Share #25 Posted August 7, 2007 Wilfredo: one entirely irrelevant comment. If you lived in the UK, its National Health Service allows you to book appointments at a chosen hospital ON LINE. Wow! Snag is, system doesn't cater for Mac users! (So you join lengthy telephone queue instead...) He lives in California. I seriously doubt he'll be too concerned.

Seems to have gone quiet on specific firmware commentary. Seriously, is someone collating a wishlist for future firmware releases?: my two points above don't seem to qualify as "bugs and issues" as such, and do not seem "pie in the sky"--simply the considered response of a long term Leica user (started with battered IIIc in 1960's, later an M6)--who occasionally defected to Nikon/Mamiya/Fuji/Contax (FM2's, F3, early D100, D200, Mam C330, 6, 7, Fuji S2, S3, Contax G RF--all gone now except the 2 D Nikons). Nor too hard to achieve, I would have thought--streamlining /simplifying processes in traditional Leica "less is more" kind of way? Best,
carstenw Posted August 8, 2007 Share #27 Posted August 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Piers, if I understand you correctly, you can show the clipping full-screen at review time. There are two settings you need to enable, but I don't have my camera here right now.
Piers Posted August 8, 2007 Share #28 Posted August 8, 2007 I'll go back to check handbook, Carsten, thanks. There's so much expertise sluicing around in this forum (which I've read closely since joining) that it would be a shame if this collective resource were not presented to Leica in a coherent way, whether via a moderated wish list or some other kind of dialogue? Piers Posted August 8, 2007 Share #29 Posted August 8, 2007 OK Carsten, I've checked the camera: the facility to display clipping full screen (only with histogram as well) is only available with "auto review" (i.e. immediately after taking each shot): there is no way I can see (yet??) to set the camera so images can be viewed full screen with clipping at a later time--only in the small pane within the info field: to critically examine an image then requires enlarging and scrolling within this small pane--several stages where clearly, the facility to set full screen playback always to show clipping (as possible with Nik D200), could, as I say, streamline the process. Since this facility is clearly technically available to the camera--in auto review mode--it should be possible to offer as an option for standard review, say via the "duration" subset of the auto review setting menu. Best PS I've viewed your interesting photoblog a number of times
carstenw Posted August 8, 2007 Share #30 Posted August 8, 2007 Ah okay, I was wondering if that was what you meant, but decided that the word "preview" meant that you didn't Any suggestions/comments/criticism/raves wrt. my blog are very welcome! Piers Posted August 9, 2007 Share #32 Posted August 9, 2007 Piers, if you set the auto-review to "hold" with clipping on, that should achieve what you want. Wilson Thanks Wilson, but I already tried this--It keeps the immediate post shooting auto review until cancelled, but--and this is my point--one cannot at some later point go back to review the clipping on all shots previously taken at full screen, only in the small sub pane in the info screen, so involving two further stages of enlarging and scrolling for a critical appraisal. (This is the case at any rate with my M8 with the new firmware) As I pointed out originally, one can set a default to show clipping whenever images are viewed onscreen on the NiK D200, and since on the M8 "auto review" has this function, surely a simple software fix could make this option available for all onscreen playback of image as a default if required? Best The miniature thumbnail on the info screen is next to useless for clipping assessment I agree. It would be nice if you could post review with clipping, given that the dynamic range of the M8 with the 8 bit file is limited at the bright end, so I think we are in 100% accord. carstenw Posted August 9, 2007 Share #34 Posted August 9, 2007 You can't view the image full-screen with clipping later on, but you can zoom in, and the histogram adjusts to the area shown, so if you want to examine some part, this is at least possible.
