Jonathan Levin Posted November 8, 2019 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is it possible to shoot tethered with the SL2 and power the camera at the same time? I know there is one USBC port on camera. Some kind of hub?
Advertisement Posted November 8, 2019 Posted November 8, 2019 Hi Jonathan Levin, Take a look here SL2 Tether and power at the same time?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
caissa Posted November 8, 2019 Share #2 Posted November 8, 2019 (edited) I do not know for sure, but I would expect that the computer used for tethering can at the same time also supply the camera with electricity. Should be no problem as long as the camera uses not more power than confirmed in the USB 3.1c standard. We will definitely see when the camera is available. The main problem currently is that the software is not available, yet. A phone can also be charged via usb and accessed from the computer for file transfers at the same time. Standard procedure since many years (with my iphones). Edited November 8, 2019 by caissa
Ingo Posted November 9, 2019 Share #3 Posted November 9, 2019 As far as I remember from the field test the camera uses the power from my laptop during tethered shooting. The battery cannot be charged while the camera is used but it will also don't drain the the battery power.
Jonathan Levin Posted November 9, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted November 9, 2019 I had a feeling that it would power the camera and be able to send files. Now I need to find out if there is length limit is for tethering via USB. Thanks for your replies. I know many questions will be answered once the camera is officially available end of this month. Chuck Albertson Posted November 10, 2019 Share #5 Posted November 10, 2019 Passing power and data at the same time is a feature of the USB-C standard, but I don't know if/how it is implemented on the SL2. From Ingo's comment, it probably is.
Einst_Stein Posted May 14, 2020 Share #6 Posted May 14, 2020 Maybe for SL2, not for SL. Tethering SL will still drain the battery. maybe because it is USB 3.0. not USB-C/
scott kirkpatrick Posted May 14, 2020 Share #7 Posted May 14, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't have any tethering software installed, but i checked the properties of supplying power to the SL2 using the USB port and either USB3.1 or USB-PD sources. With the camera off, you can see that the current delivered is recharging the battery -- it decreases as the battery becomes fully charged. It looked as if charge rate was constant until the last bar is reached, then decreases. This is probably the same method used in Leica's chargers, which slow things down above 80% of capacity for longer battery life. The interesting question is what happens when the camera is on and doing something useful. I found that external sources delivered constant current to the camera, which did not vary as the camera did different things, rangeing from just sitting there, up to shooting continuously at high rate. The amount of current depended on the protocol that the power source presented., with a USB-PD source (Anker 20,000 battery pack) providing less current than my Panasonic S1R's AC to DC converter. Since the current is steady, I think it is just doing whatever it can, trying to keep the battery topped off during the shoot. And the SL2 doesn't seem to provide the full PD interface. @Ingo , have you run extended tethered sessions with an SL2 (preferably with present firmware) to see if the battery runs down or stays fully charged? Unfortunately I was only a beta tester and didn't buy the camera. Therefore I have no experience with the current firmware.
Photoworks Posted May 14, 2020 Share #9 Posted May 14, 2020 I was shooting tethered the last 2 days. Using the Leica Image Shuttle for SL2 and Capture one 20 in hot folder . The battery indicated was not charging during shoot. but on breaks where the camera goes to sleep the charging green light goes on. I think on the older SL there was no option to charge over USB, that was a new feature in SL2
