Snugglechugs Posted November 8, 2019 Share #1  Posted November 8, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone! I just purchased my first Leica lens and camera. I got a mint R7 and a Summicron-R 50mm. It is the second version so it has the built in lens hood. My question is whether or not I can use an external hood for added protection. The built in hood doesn't seem to be quite as safe compared to a hard external hood.  Curious to hear everyones thoughts on this, and excited to be here!

jaapv Posted November 9, 2019 Share #2 Â Posted November 9, 2019 Welcome! There are plenty of hoods that screw into the filter thread. Try the eBay seller Heavystar.

AZN Posted November 10, 2019 Share #4  Posted November 10, 2019 Alternatively, get a 55mm -> 52mm step-down ring and then you can use the Nikon HR-1 hood. Good quality and deep, and is what I have used for years now. Heliopan 55/52 ring: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/160369-REG/Heliopan_700451_700451_Step_Down_Ring.html HR-1 hood:  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/37613-REG/Nikon_537_HR_1_Lens_Hood.html BTW, don't skimp on the step-down ring.  The cheap ones distort easily and can almost fuse themselves to the lens filter thread, so that removing them becomes very difficult (learned the hard way).  The better quality ones don't. bags27 Posted November 11, 2019 Share #5 Â Posted November 11, 2019 especially if you can get brass rings. definitely worth whatever the difference in cost.
