I have hiked with the S and while moving to my destination I shoot handheld, 1/250 sec minimum.  When I'm at my destination the tripod is used.  I can't say that I ever find the handheld to be wanting.  While at the Leica store I met a fellow S shooter, be shoots 3 images handheld and says one will be sharper (better).  I tried this and found it's helpful.

I use my S almost always handheld, but then I am not the typical landscape shooter. Unsurprisingly, I use a tripod when the situation demands and permits it, and I am probably the one who rather tries to catch a moment with 1/30, even with the S. I have calm hands and the shutter is well damped, so that works more often than not. The S 007 gives me more freedom in the handheld department than the older S2. My travel Tripod is the Gitzo Traveler 1 with the respective Gitzo head, which is probably to some here considered a monopod at best. It is however lightweight, packs really small and then the S is not my only camera. If I would strictly only do landscape and lots of long exposures, I do not think I would buy an S camera now, but rather a used X1D.

I have been using a RRS CF tripod and found that it really does improve both the composition and sharpness of the LANDSCAPE, ARCHITECTURAL OR LOW LIGHT pictures.

As to street photography, no tripod or monopod etc...

This low light picture of whiskey distillery in Dingle Ireland is an apposite example...
