I wonder how many DMR owners use their R8/9s for film other than in cases of emergency?

 

For me, not at all. For film I'll use either the R4 for its light weight or a Leicaflex SL or SL2 for its superb viewfinder.

the perfect digital back for the R is an M9.

 

It's universal as you can use R & M lenses with it.

Agree Steve, but it's a choice you have.

 

Remember .....(2) Leica R8/9 with (1) DMR and Film back combo is equal to 4 cameras.

(2) full Digital or (2) Film or one of each is equal to 2 cameras.

 

Only that the DMR is so expensive, you could easily buy several Digital cameras for the same price.

I for one, would love to own one.

But cannot justify the price, as I only spend about 450 Australian $$ on film per year.

If you think the R8's are going for very little in the second hand market, you should look at The prices on the top of the line Nikon and Canon DSLR you would be shocked.

Out here the R8 is still around 1800 Aus $$.

The digital R will only attract those who own the R lenses. Who will invest such amount of money on changing the whole system from Canon or Nikon to Leica, for not only the digital body but also a series of R lenses.

 

But if you are saying if there is no R10, then I will keep using the existing R8/DMR combo. And if really there is no more R digital body, the second hand price of the existing DMR should be increased, especially the performance has been improved by using the new V1.3 firmware.

There's certainly an economic component to the decision process, but it's not all about economics. The DMR, in particular its high-ISO performance and dynamic range, has enabled many more photos than I'd have gotten with film thus changing the productivity part of the equation.

if the M9 is a back for the R you only have to upgrade one camera and if you need a backup; with two M9's you hace eather one R & one M, two M's or 2 R's and Leica could sell more lenses and less cameras
