dimm Posted November 2, 2019 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Shooting mostly in B&W I want to advance to pure monochrom experience instead of converting color. Question is should I wait for M10-M to come or buy used 246 on eBay?
Advertisement Posted November 2, 2019 Posted November 2, 2019 Hi dimm, Take a look here Used Monochrom 246 Or wait for Monochrom M10. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted November 2, 2019 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2019 Welcome Dimm, You are definitely the only one who can answer. I just can tell that I wanted M10 Monochrome (in M-D variety 😪) for long. Early this year, I had opportunity to buy M246 not too expensive SH and I use it along my first version Monochrome. Those two MM+M246 complete each other so well that for years to come, I don't want anymore another (...M10 Monochrome when it will be available). They are much better than my own skill to use them, and I don't want more pixels ( what for ? )
muah Posted November 2, 2019 Share #3 Posted November 2, 2019 if money is no issue, i suggest you wait if this is your first Leica. i went with MM246, and have M10 first. MM246 is excellent compliment but i feel M10 form factor is more mature and also M10 has Leica Fotos. For 246, i have to wait till i am near a CARD reader before i can offload and share the photos. dimm Posted November 2, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted November 2, 2019 My first was Q2, after which I fell in love with Leica and started to want to get real rangefinder. I wanted M10-D first, but I found comparison of high ISO performance and saw that 246 leaves M10 in dust. Since I mostly shoot street photography in B&W brought me to logical decision to get a monochrom

The 246 is a more general purpose camera to my mind. It is a bit fatter too. unless I might want to have the possibility to make 30 seconds films in street, I’d go for the rawer MM1 Edited November 2, 2019 by otto.f

dkmoore Posted November 2, 2019 Share #7 Posted November 2, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I prefer the look of the M9M high ISO but overall I’ve never once thought to myself that I needed more ISO room with either and I’ve owned/used them both for 4 years or so. RayD28 Posted November 3, 2019 Share #10 Posted November 3, 2019 Interesting topic. I've thought about the same thing but I doubt I can afford an $8,000+ camera for a while. I had a bad experience with an M9 so I'm hesitant about getting a MM1 although the price point is in my range and I probably had a bad example. I fiddled with SD cards, a new battery, firmware, removing and reinserting the battery, etc. Again, probably a bad example. I took advantage of the upgrade incentive and got an 240P. Also, at the time the upgrade to the new sensor was several months and I'm not very patient. Edited November 3, 2019 by RayD28

benqui Posted November 3, 2019 Share #14 Posted November 3, 2019 (edited) The question seems to be easy but as you can see, there are many different opinions. I have the Mono I and I am totally happy with it. With higher ISO (up to 3200) the photos got an analog look. So would I buy a new M10 Monochrom? With GAS, yes! From an aesthetic view, maybe. To get better photos? No, never. If you have a look at your street photos, I am sure that no one will be better with the M10 in comparison to the 246. I use my MMI mostly for portraits and a new Mono would never give my photos a better look in comparison to the amount of money I had to spend again. So if you have the money and you love it (what I can understand) take the M10, but you can get the Monochrome feeling also with a 246 without loosing quality. From the money you save, you can buy an additional lens. Edited November 3, 2019 by benqui
dimm Posted November 3, 2019 Author Share #15 Posted November 3, 2019 Actually, after a few days (or weeks :)) of considerations I decided to go on MM1. Looking for a good deal on eBay. What would you say about this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-M-M-Monochrom-ccd-replaced-with-Leica-50mm-24-mm-and-Zeiss-35-mm/113940404716 Camera has CCD replaced and 8k clicks. Or I could just buy a body with a new CCD and 2k clicks and 35mm Zeiss for $900 https://www.ebay.com/itm/113929387488
Jeff S Posted November 3, 2019 Share #16 Posted November 3, 2019 I would buy from a reputable dealer with warranty. Good ones, like Leica Miami, will only sell MMs with the new sensor and paperwork. But that's just me. The last one you show might be fine, but the limited warranty doc has no info filled in on top...serial, date, etc....and the other doc is for other repair. $3500 or so is a good price for one that is truly mint....mine looks cleaner, bought from a dealer two years ago. No, I had no bad experiences with my M9 or MM1, except the general sensor problem that we all know of and have been solved. I have my M9 for 10 years now and my MM1 new from the start. Jeff Right, I wouldn’t buy a digital camera with that sort of prices through eBay. I don’t know about your experience with digital M’s dimm, but a simple thing as dust on the sensor can become a whole drama if you don’t have that known dealer for you to see things in proportion. ramosa Posted November 3, 2019 Share #19 Posted November 3, 2019 I agree. For minty MM, I'd definitely buy from an authorized Leica dealer. I have an MM and love it. I purchased one new, but it became consumed in a seemingly endless wait for a sensor replacement. Just a year ago, I purchased another MM--new old stock. If it goes bad someday, I may be interested in a M10 monochrome (but have never been interested in a 246).
