Advertisement Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 Hi elansprint72, Take a look here Evening's sandcastles. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted August 3, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 3, 2007 That's a good one. I'm not sure about the completely blacked out shadows, but I really like the idea.
jmr Posted August 3, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 3, 2007 Pete, works for me too.
elansprint72 Posted August 3, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted August 3, 2007 Thanks chaps; the foreground looks to me like I printed it on too hard a grade of paper- not sure what to do about that in digi-world but I'm only a beginner and I'll play about with it. elansprint72 Posted August 4, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted August 4, 2007 Thanks for your opinions folks. Makes a refreshing change for someone to say that they don't like an image.
stunsworth Posted August 4, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 4, 2007 Use the lasso tool to select the sandy area and then use a curves adjustment to lighten just that. Here's a rough and ready attempt. Can't do anything about the blocked shadows in the posted version I'm afraid.
Guest Motivfindender Posted August 4, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 4, 2007 Thanks for your opinions folks. Makes a refreshing change for someone to say that they don't like an image. Sorry.. but... I like it a lot ! It has avery strong grafical effect: the dramatic sky with its interesting clouds, separated by the fine-line band of coast, the sea with the waves in front just separating the strand from sea: This strong grafical effect is rarely seen and pleases a lot to my eyes. . the sand appears very 3-dimensional and the diagonal separation (will say: a nearly perfect cut and at the same time a fitting-together) of the three parts is very well seens and well-done. The deep black looks like a good print in my eyes and of course the B/W is perfect for that scene. I find it excellent. Dirk
elansprint72 Posted August 4, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted August 4, 2007 Dirk, thanks- it is kind of unusual isn't it? Steve, being a cheapskate, I don't have curves but I'm sure there is something I can do. Thanks.
stunsworth Posted August 4, 2007 Share #13 Posted August 4, 2007 Pete, you could use levels - move the middle slider to the left. But I can't remember if Elements allows you to adjust a selection.
jmr Posted August 4, 2007 Share #14 Posted August 4, 2007 Steve, Elements certainly does - Pete just needs to use a layer mask and then adjust to his heart's content
Rolo Posted August 4, 2007 Share #15 Posted August 4, 2007 Hi Pete, How ya' doin' ? Steve's right, does need less of those black holes, methinks. Rolo
ctb Posted August 5, 2007 Share #16 Posted August 5, 2007 Now I like it, Rolo has the magic touch. Sorry Pete, I have learned something here today, and that is to look at the possibilities and not what I see, if you get my drift. Your photo has been made great in my opinion, with a few tweeks here and there, maybe I should not be to ready to dismiss, and look at my photo's a wee bit more carefully before sending them to the dustbin. Well seen Pete
andybarton Posted August 5, 2007 Share #17 Posted August 5, 2007 You are dead right, Chris. If comments on photos is any judge of success, I have been more successful here with shots I initially rejected, than ones which jumped out to me immediately. elansprint72 Posted August 5, 2007 Author Share #18 Posted August 5, 2007 Layer mask? I need to get the book out again! I'm thinking of offering Rolo a contract; I continue to produce my crappy shots, he fixes 'em up, then I post them.
Guest Motivfindender Posted August 5, 2007 Share #19 Posted August 5, 2007 @ pete THIS problem could be a Theme in the section you discussed, isn´t it? The point you had discussed was exactly that: How to advance performance of photos - be it by cropping or - as here the case - be it by sophisticated SW AND the ones who know how to use them. For my part, I would appreciate it, because I am just begining to switch to digital - for me, it is like leraning photography (that means: darkroom work and the other way to make photos digital) once again from the very beginning.... Rolo Posted August 5, 2007 Share #20 Posted August 5, 2007 Pete, How much you thinking of paying for this contract? Do I get twice as much if I pull two images out of your pics? There's always another one lurking in your backgrounds. Not always as good as the first maybe, but sometimes worth the effort of exploring. Ha !!
