Hi all - I've seen a few references to this problem. The rubber coat on the card door of my 007 is coming away and I'm waiting for a simple replacement piece from to be shipped to the Leica store in London. What happens when the rest of the rubber outer starts to come away; do they replace that in store of does that mean the camera needs to be sent back to Leica?

I have exactly the same problem mentioned in a thread some weeks ago. I was at Leica Wetzlar and they changed the whole door. The developed a new glue and production process for the rubber. In some weeks I will send my 2007 to Wetzlar. Its the only way. They remove the rubber totally, then they put the new rubber with glue on the camera and it needs 2 days to dry. That is really pissing me off for a product with this price tag and category of "quality". I have an old 5D MK III from 2012 that survived 70 weddings with all weather conditions. and there all rubber is still sitting in its place.

Send it in before Brexit :)

Leica can give you a loaner unit while you wait.

In my experience the danger in sending the body to Germany for the rearmoring is Leica will discover other problems (subtle miscalibrations that aren't noticeable in use) and charge you dearly for their rectification.

In the event that the S requires any disassembly for repair or adjustment (CLA), the covering material has to be removed first. So  its replacement is part of that servicing. I have never seen more than very slight lifting of an edge of the covering on the card door. I am sure wear is influenced by your shooting environment. My camera sent at the end of the warranty period for CF card latch failure proved to need significant work as well as disassembly to replace that latch. That was about two years ago. Everything for the body itself has been perfect since.

The equipment gets an initial inspection on receipt and an estimate provided. Depending on the condition of your camera body, I would suggest that you discuss the process firstly with the S support team.

Jan if it’s any consolation a turn around estimated as a week makes anyone not in Germany very jealous!

My usual turnaround is about ten days (I am in Austria...no kangaroos here, as the favourite sticker says). Having said that, I have never used any other camera system that requires so many servicing visits to the manufacturer. And, staying on topic, my card door cover started to peel again last week, having been reattached by Leica in Germany about a year and a half ago. This time, I think I will just put some superglue in the gap and see if it helps (emoji for rolling my eyes here).

superglue has vapor, that might clog up any glass surface... so be sure to put it in a airy open room...

Superglue isn't very good with plastics and rubber.

I'd use rubber or latex glues.  Tarzans grip will work well.

Peel back and clean off, allow to dry.  Add smeared glue thinly(use toothpick), both surfaces, dry till slightly tacky and push together.  Hold down with tape helps...leave for a few hours.

I like your sticker saying...im in Australia, where we do have kangaroos..😀

Today I sent my 30mm Elmarit off to Leica to get the AF motor replaced (as a preventative measure). I'll report back how long it takes to return to me.

The Lens was delivered last Thursday but I haven't had a courtesy acknowledgment from Leica yet.

Yesterday I managed to buy a Excellent++ condition 30-90mm for only £2,500. Depending on how long my Elmarit 30mm takes to come back from Leica (which is now slated for sale due to my getting the 30-90mm) I'll probably also send the 30-90mm away for a preventative AF motor replacement.

I know - and that was with free shipping!

I figured that at such a good price even if it had an old AF motor inside that requires replacing (preventatively or in the future) that the money I saved would more than cover the service cost. I’ll check with Leica first, though, as it might even be within the 5 year replace for free timescale.

have them check the optics alignment too

I have had 2 copies of these and one is stellar, the other has a off center focus plane.

Yes, good suggestion.

I'm aware of sample variation with this lens so have gambled that any deficiencies can be sorted by Leica when I get the AF motor replaced. 🤞

Thanks

A-ha! Just had a “confirmation of receipt" e-mail from Leica. In the e-mail you get a link to their "Leica Digital Workmap" webpage where you can keep a track of what's happening.

Fingers crossed!

I've received my 30-90mm. Very nice!

When I turn my 006 on it states on the rear screen "Lens firmware update available". Can I do this with my 006? I've tried holding in the Back button when I turn it on but nothing happens.

The little "Test certificate" leaflet in the box has the date "2015/07/24" so I'm hoping that this means that it's only 4-odd years old so I'll be able to send it to Leica for a free autofocus replacement. It didn't come with the original purchase receipt so maybe this is the clincher?

Leica got back to me: the cost for the new AF motor AND return shipping comes out at a very respectable €236.86. I’m happy with that.

My recently acquired 30-90mm will get the new AF motor for free as it is less than 5 years old. Result! 👍🏼

I just had the 'estimate' for redressing the leather coating on my 'S'. Apparently that work will be carried out for free under warranty but the sensor needs an 'adjustment' for which the bill will be £395.

Quite how or why a 14 month old camera needs a sensor adjustment or what indeed that even is, is beyond me. Anyone got any clues?
