Advertisement Posted August 31, 2019 Posted August 31, 2019 Hi BXL Gotham, Take a look here Smallest flash for Q2? Preferably off camera.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Yangpei Posted August 31, 2019 Share #2 Posted August 31, 2019 I've bought the Leica SF-40 to use with my Q2. I was surprised to see that it appears to be identical (on the outside) with my Nissin i40 I use with my Fuji bodies. Welcome, dear visitor! I have only used the SF-40 for about a week. So far, no issues with auto focus or camera locking up.
maxtor Posted September 1, 2019 Share #5 Posted September 1, 2019 Hi, I've SF-40 and I highly recommend this flash. I bought this one because I read many negative opinions about smaller one SF-26. My settings: Q2: a) ISO Auto (max. ISO depending from light situation), Minimal Shutter Speed 1/125 sec. or 1/250 sec. b) Flash settings: Flash Mode - On, Flash Sync - Start of Exp. c) Electronic Shutter - Extended d) Shutter Speed - Auto SF-40: a) TTL or Manual (M) Greetings,
BXL Gotham Posted September 1, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted September 1, 2019 Thanks. I’m buying the SF26 today I can’t carry a giant SF40 as it defeats the purpose of the Q2 for me. Will report back findings soon.
Leica Guy Posted September 2, 2019 Share #7 Posted September 2, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’ve posted elsewhere that I had an SF-26 and replaced it with the SF-40. The ‘26 is a little smaller, but I found the AAA batteries woefully weak. I’m very happy with the ‘40. It takes 4-AA’s. Look forward to hearing your experience.
Orguy Posted September 5, 2019 Share #8 Posted September 5, 2019 I too bought the sf 26 and soon regretted it. Yes it is nice and compact but i could never get it to work consistently as a fill flash. Sometimes it filled, often it didn't. Plus it is too weak. Overpriced piece of junk, an embarrassment for leica IMO. Based on much feedback here I'm thinking of getting the sf 40. I mainly want a dependable consistent flash that gives good fill flash and bounce inside. Everyone still likes the sf 40 right? Anyone want an sf 26 cheap? DexL Posted September 6, 2019 Share #9 Posted September 6, 2019 I am happier with the SF40 as well. Fill flash is easier and more consistent with this baby. Also the manual on flash adjustments are a big plus in my opinion vs menu diving with the SF26.
Jared Posted September 6, 2019 Share #10 Posted September 6, 2019 Guide number on the SF26 is quite low. Cycle time is slow. Leica’s TTL implementation is, in all cases, poor, but the limited capabilities of the SF26 compound this problem. It’s fine for what it is, but it is not at all versatile or capable. The only redeeming qualities are it’s size, weight, and simplicity. No manual mode, so if you are getting a poor result out of TTL you are stuck. BXL Gotham Posted September 7, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted September 7, 2019 I’m quite happy with the SF-26, and prize the portability and sleek profile over any added features of the 40. To see my results, which may not fit your idea of success as I’m shooting gritty street scenes not studio or magazine work, check the last 20 images on my citizens page: https://www.bxlgotham.com/citizens

Jared Posted September 7, 2019 Share #13 Posted September 7, 2019 So funny! You happened to catch my daughter in one of the Union Square shots! She lives not too far from there and goes to school at the New School.

Great organization. She loves it there. Mostly, I think she loves that it’s 2,500 mi away from me! That, and she loves theater. NYC is a great place for that, obviously. Nice shots, by the way. I’m terrible at street photography. Taking them makes me uncomfortable, and that shows in my pics. They all feel timid and out of place—or maybe that’s just me again. maxtor Posted September 9, 2019 Share #17 Posted September 9, 2019 (edited) You're right. Auto ISO doesn't work with flash. I haven't seen it before because I photographed with flash (SF-40) in good light conditions (fill flash). Unexpectedly one function of Auto ISO works with flash: Minimal Shutter Speed. In my opinion full Auto ISO option with flash should be added in next Q2 software version. In my Nikon D850 Auto ISO work's very well with flash. Thank you for correction.
