I remember de Gaulle well.  I was in France when he returned to power in the early '60's.  He was arrogant and just what France needed at the time to restore its faded gloire.  I remember well, too, Churchill's words on de Gaulle, "We all have our cross to bear and mine is the Cross of Lorraine."  As I remember many of the French were publicly disdainful of de Gaulle but privately quite proud of the pride restored.  He was controversial to be sure but he was also beneficial in the end-up.
