Greg Haag Posted July 22, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 22, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I apologize in advance for posting a non S question on the S forum, but I felt like this would be the group that would best understand my need. I want to sell some of my non S gear and get a compact camera to have when weight or space is an issue. Has anyone gone down this road that might have some suggestions? Thanks in advance, Greg

John McMaster Posted July 22, 2019 Share #3 Posted July 22, 2019 My light kit is an M(240) and CCD Monochrom, with two out of 28/2, 35/1.4 and 50/2 APO.... john

Thanks in advance, Greg Greg: I feel your pain (or you feel mine)! Some suggestions: Leica Q or Q2 (28mm lens with ability to in camera frame to 35, 50, 75mm); or CL (apsc w capacity for M, L, or Leica L lenses); SL ( a bit heavier, but will handle M lenses wonderfully and is not so bulky or heavy with them, and versatility w S to L adapter to handle S lenses - which are superb on the SL). FWIW, pre-owned prices on the SL now are exceptionally good now that the Panasonic 47mp competitors are out. When I was in California, my "light" option was the SL w the 35 1.4 FLE. Of course, as the others have mentioned the rangefinder options are there as well. Loved your car/truck shot with the S 70. peterv Posted July 22, 2019 Share #5 Posted July 22, 2019 Greg, I've sold my RX1RM2 to help fund my new S, but one high res fixed 28mm Leica Q or 35mm RX1 is an interesting option. Nowadays for small, I go really small and bring my Sony RX100M1, still good enough for really nice A4 20x30 cm prints and in good light even A3 can be done.

bags27 Posted July 22, 2019 Share #7 Posted July 22, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ming Thein--as always--has interesting things to say on "modularity" and includes the new Sigma. It's probably the smallest camera that will use L mount lenses. I doubt it's a good option yet, more like a "prototype" for Leica users--keep our eyes on it and await further development. https://blog.mingthein.com/2019/07/22/modularity/#more-18745
John McMaster Posted July 22, 2019 Share #8 Posted July 22, 2019 Is there such a thing as a small L mount lens yet? Leica ones are about the same size/weight as S lens... john

erlingmm Posted July 23, 2019 Share #10 Posted July 23, 2019 Leica Q2 is fantastic, it has enough resolution for digital zoom, no lens changes.
dave.gt Posted July 23, 2019 Share #11 Posted July 23, 2019 Greg, I recently posted a similar thread on another forum, specifically with my observation that the M and the S are closely related in design philosophy and use. The M10 was my topic, but unaffordable for me. Like you, I need a small form camera, but I prefer not mixing brands or systems. I work well with the simplicity of the S. And the M, any M, film or digital. So, I may wind up with anything from an M9 to the current M10. The choice of lens will be the most difficult decision though... 😀

Regards, Rob The SL would be a good choice as it is somewhat affordable now... I just wish it had an OVF!!! I don't know if I could EVER get comfortable, let alone, enjoy an EVF. So, an M is it for me... an M9 with a new sensor? A Monochrome with a new sensor? Sigh... I will just have to try an SL since it is at least affordable. Not sure where..., Edited July 23, 2019 by dave.gt
Greg Haag Posted July 23, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted July 23, 2019 Thanks Dave, that makes sense. I think my leaning at this point is either the M10 or Q2, but still trying to gather some information. I hope everything is going well!

mgrayson3 Posted July 23, 2019 Share #15 Posted July 23, 2019 (edited) My tiny kit is a TL2 with 11-23 zoom and 35/1.4 prime. The CL didn't exist yet. The TL2 interface drives me crazy, but those two lenses are stunning. A Voigtländer 10mm RWA sits around for even wider. Heavier is SL with 16-35 zoom. (I shoot wide). I only have the three SL zooms, and they are prime quality for their apertures. The V 10mm works here, but that's a very special use case. Stuart Richardson Posted July 23, 2019 Share #16 Posted July 23, 2019 I just picked up a Fuji X100F after admiring it for years. So far, so good. While Leica makes a lot of nice cameras, I think they missed the boat here, at least for my taste. The Q lenses are very wide for any sort of general use, and they are EVF cameras. What I like about the X100F is that it has an optical VF, classic manual controls, and a small but useful built in flash. For this kind of camera I think handiness is the most important aspect. When I shoot film, I found that I took better candids and city photographs with the Hexar AF than I did with my Leica M series cameras, if only because it was quicker and less thoughtful in use...more zen like. I am hoping the X100F plays the same role for me.

John McMaster Posted July 23, 2019 Share #18 Posted July 23, 2019 I have the original Fuji X100 but have never got on with it. john
Stuart Richardson Posted July 23, 2019 Share #19 Posted July 23, 2019 (edited) Of course. One other thing I forgot to mention is that it is small, light and the lens does not stick out much. This means it is a lot less bulky and easier to slip into a bag or coat pocket. It is not as small as the Ricoh GR series (another worth looking at), but it is really very small...especially if you are used the the S, SL, M and so on... John -- I tried out the original and I agree, it did not do it for me. But things have apparently come quite a long way. Apparently it has been a very nice evolution with much better operational speeds, image quality and features. But I agree, it is likely not for everyone. I figured I would give it a try, because if nothing else, the interface and feel of the camera are so nice...
