lars_bergquist Posted July 29, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here's an interesting new M8 glitch. Yesterday when walking though the Stockholm inner harbour to see the participants of the Tall Ships Races, I noticed that the Auto Review had come on after a shot (I keep it on 'off' to save current). A quick check of the Set menu revealed that ISO had changed from 320 to 160, and compression from JPG fine to DNG + JPG basic. In the Menu menu, everything had suddenly reverted to default settings: Lens recognition to Off, Self timer to 12 sec., Monitor brightness to Standard ... and so forth. A check of EXIF data revealed that the glitch happened as I approached the Russian four-mast bark Kruzenshtern, which is why I hereby (possibly unjustly) name the thing the Kruzenshtern Effect. It does at least sound appropriately sinister. Can the thing have been caused by electromagnetic zapping? Many of these ancient windjammers are as electronically endowed as many a modern frigate. At least, safely at home, my M8 is back to normal. The old man from B.E. (Before Electronics)

Knorp Posted July 29, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 29, 2007 Hi Lars, the ship had been used for surveys: Kruzenshtern (ship) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I guess somehow the reset button must have been activated but wouldn't that reset all profiles ? Did you check that ? Otherwise it surely is 'sinister' !
gwelland Posted July 29, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 29, 2007 Are you sure that the Set & dial didn't accidently get pressed so that the Preset 0 got invoked? There have been other posts here before about accidental pressing of the set button and potential workarounds suggested to protect the button. lars_bergquist Posted July 29, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted July 29, 2007 Are you sure that the Set & dial didn't accidently get pressed so that the Preset 0 got invoked? There have been other posts here before about accidental pressing of the set button and potential workarounds suggested to protect the button. Considering the design of the camera, who can be absolutely certain? But in this case, it would have been the Menu button, and this is not quite as much in harm's way as the Set button. Admittedly, I was not completely serious when I named the 'effect' ... However, I think that the Solms people should think about improving the 'button safety' aspect. Would a 'reset' command erase user profiles? I have not been too interested in these, but as fall-back option, I might be. eudemian Posted July 29, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 29, 2007 I am not sure if this a variant of your Kruzenshtern effect but my camera set itself to -3 exposure compensation, I certainly did not do that inadvertently. Shot about 5 pictures before I realised. No great harm but strange and willful behaviour. Tom
Michael M. Posted July 29, 2007 Share #6 Posted July 29, 2007 Hello I observed some time ago also some irregular, not forced (by me) changements in the settings of the menue. Actually - after reflashing camera with 1.107-2 SW I'm wondering why user profile is always reset to: - after formatting a memory card inside camera. This is 100% reproduceable - that sure that I'm starting to think about 'it must be a feature' ??! Anybody else same story? Was it already same in 1.102? Iron Flatline Posted July 29, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) All I know is that occasionally I would accidentally scroll to User Profiles when I was actually trying to change ISO. Not looking, I had actually hit "up" before being in the menu. I thought I was switching back to ISO 160 when in fact I had gone to the Profile selector, and just by tapping it there was a switch back to some kind of default - JPG, 12 sec delay, etc.
Iron Flatline Posted July 29, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 29, 2007 Good name though, I'm using that.
Michael M. Posted July 29, 2007 Share #9 Posted July 29, 2007 Changing anything in the profile-menue (like ISO 160 to 320 ...) will force user profile automatically down to basic (-). I can see that as a regular bahaviour. Make some sense for me ... But also changing down by formatting the card ??? And still not knowing why resetting to (-) happen from time to time without any 'known action' ... Michael
jaapv Posted July 29, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 29, 2007 One of my camera's developed a habit of reverting to default spontaneously. Nothing serious, but a one-week roundtrip to Solms was needed to cure the problem.
erl Posted July 30, 2007 Share #11 Posted July 30, 2007 Lars, You didn't see Harry Potter in the vicinity did you? I do envy you the sight of those tall ships. I crewed on the Anna Kristina some years ago, when it visited Australia. It's a 200 yr old Danish square rigged barquentine. Fairly small with brown sails. A beautiful ship and very seaworthy. I spent many happy hours aloft in the rigging. I wonder if she was there for the race.

(Especially Prof. Rumbledore, come to think of it ... especially in a Harley Davidson tee). And no, Anna Kristina was not present. And also absent, to our chagrin, was the good ship Götheborg III, the replica of a 1740's East Indiaman that sailed to China and back last year. Still, the turnout was impressive. TimF Posted July 30, 2007 Share #13 Posted July 30, 2007 Prof. Rumbledore Even more so Prof. Dumbledore though! At least nobody's mentioned President Putin yet. Whoops!
