Took this a couple of years ago on a Nikon FE with a Nikkor-P auto 105mm 1:2.5 and Tri-X 400. Printed more recently on a Leitz Focomat.

Your extensive collection of VW's is terrific.

Officially it was a „VW-Porsche“. The early seventies when it was built were perhaps „interesting“ for VW - as living at the brink of an abyss may be interesting.

The technology of their cars was still based on the air-cooled rear-engine concept which came from the thirtees. Production quality was low so they had a lot of quality issues.

Only after they had acquired Audi-NSU and took over their modern models (K 70 from NSU) or technical concepts which led to the Golf and Passat from the mid 70s onward they were looking for a sustainable future again.

Production of VW air-cooled was massive, or are you referring to Porsche?

Aside: My last 'VW' engine had no parts from VW. All aftermarket. Heavy duty cases, Nikasil plated machined aluminum cylinders, big port heads, bored. stroked, H-beam con rods, split cam, roller rockers, 2165cc, four Weber carbs, full-flow oil system, Swedish oil coolers, 4-2  headers... and more. :)

Some protoypes for the "KdF-Wagen" (which was the first name during Nazi-time for the later VW Beetle):
