First go with the f1 Noctilux, which arrived today. This with the EVF - learning to use the RF is going to take some time......

Thanks Pattyfrank for the encouragement!

Hi Christopher,

Congratulations on your new acquisition, which can be frustrating but pays you back in spades with satisfaction when everything works as it should.  In case it helps, I find that I have 'to get my eye in' with the Noctilux wide open if I haven't used it for a little while.  I'll get focus 'about right' for a few shots and then I hit focus dead on from then on - it might be something to do with wearing varifocals and finding the sweet spot on those as well.

Pete.

Hi Pete - thank you for that. I have a similar experience with my 75/1.4 - and I wear varifocals too. I suspect that my new-to-me Noctilux is ever so slightly front-focusing on my quite new M10M, which behaves perfectly with my other lenses - a tiny nudge anti-clockwise rights the difference between focus on the EVF and RF. The focusing ring also seems very slightly ‘sticky’ when making fine adjustments, esp at the extremes of the throw - slightly more so at the infinity end. Is this a recognised characteristic? Once over the excitement of actually having a fabled Noctilux I may send it to Mr Taylor for a once-over. Other than that, it’s mint - it seems never to have been used, and it’s coded!

Best, Christopher

Not with mine.  I bought mine used from Ivor at Red Dot Cameras quite a few years ago and it had just returned from a CLA and collimation by Malcolm Taylor, which was the icing on the cake for me.  I suspect that Malcolm used quite viscous (and therefore long-lasting) lubricant during the CLA and mine has quite heavy focus action so I use a Steer that makes the focus action lighter but there are no sticky points.  It sounds like your lubricant is ready to be replaced so Malcolm should sort that out without a problem.

Pete.

Musotographer,  I found your photograph in post #929 to be most excellent.  The elements of light, tonal range, composition and most important content, caused me to Stop, Look, Think and Feel something about that moment in time.  The aforementioned elements separate a mere photo from one that is a most excellent photograph.  Keep creating.  You are on your way to mastering the Noctilux and creating more superb photographs....Bravo!  r/ Mark

Thank you so much Mark - that's very kind. The Noctilux is clearly an extraordinary tool and I am very excited at the journey ahead!

Thanks Pete - I'm sure Malcolm will be able to sort it out - but for the moment it's not going anywhere! The Steer looks interesting - I'll see how heavy the focusing ends up being. Thank you for a new word - collimation - I had to look it up! 🙂

I got my copy of a Noctilux 50/1.1 v4 yesterday and seems to be in a perfect condition. It looks as new. I am quite happy to use such an optical masterpiece after a long personal decision process, buy or not to buy. Of course, I went out for stroll into the drizzle and took a few photos. I can confirm all the comments I have read so far about this special lens - hard to focus wide open, sharpness, special look, character etc.

I owned a CV 50/1.1 before and think these two lenses are not as different as always stated. Looking through my pictures I took yesterday it seems the Noctilux renders the colours and OOF area way much better - but the CV is in a bright environment not bad either. So I keep on practicing to tame the beast ;)

Congratulation too, Musotographer.  Let us know how it goes.

Today, I went to one of my favorite spots and shot quite a few photos. Last time I had my CV 35/1.2 with me, today the Noctilux - the following is just one shot of about 500 photos. Not perfect but it's fun to get used to the lens.
