Matsaly Posted April 30, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 30, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone attended this workshop? I'm a new Q user and would like to go further with the Q (and eventually Q2). The owners manual does a satisfactory job of explaining "how to select and set" various functions but doesn't explain why one should do so. I wonder if the Akademie class fee of $200 is worth it or whether I should just enroll in a local "intro to photography" course instead. https://leicaakademieusa.com/product/leica-q-owners-workshop-los-angeles-ca-may-25th-2019/
Advertisement Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 Hi Matsaly, Take a look here Leica Q Owners workshop (Leica Akademie). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 30, 2019 Share #2 Posted April 30, 2019 You could do both The Leica Akademie is always worthwhile.
bags27 Posted May 1, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 1, 2019 I think that if you're somewhat new to photography, this is probably well worth it, as it will put to rest any anxiety about using what appears to be a simple machine, but one with a very complex microchip behind it. But if you already know and actively use things like depth of field and the exposure triangle, the Q is so intuitive that this workshop may be a bit boring. Leica also has fantastic day and multi-day workshops for the various cameras and photography in general, and you should put your name on the mailing list for these as well. Enjoy!! Chris O Posted May 1, 2019 Share #4 Posted May 1, 2019 I took it in Los Angeles and loved it. I wish I had taken it when I first got the Q.
Matsaly Posted May 1, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted May 1, 2019 I did a lot of film photography 30+ years ago and then had an extended hiatus. Got back in the hobby a few years ago and dabbled with a few point and shoot digital cameras. Liked the convenience of digital but wanted a higher quality full frame, hence my recent purchase of the QP. I understand DOF but have no idea of the "exposure triangle". Guess I need some schooling... As an aside, I purchased Thorsten Overgaard eBook on the Q. That should get me going in the right direction:)

To the best of your recollection was it just going through the "menu settings" or a more dynamic class?

Guess I need some schooling... just a fancy way of saying the relationship among ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. I have a very similar story to yours; I sort of dropped out when digital came in. I got to digital 4 or 5 years before buying the Q, and had no trouble at all learning its essential features. There is no question too dumb that I could post here (and still do!) that some kind and patient person wouldn't answer. But for $200 it sounds like something that might be fun. You will also strengthen ties to the Leica store and meet folks.

It was very hands on, we even went out for an hour to shoot in manual mode and shot inside the store in different lighting conditions.

The workshop I attended at our local Leica Store was "good" but left a number of people with unanswered questions and not esoteric ones at that. I suspect the value will directly depend on the course instructor, his/her experience with the Q and with photography in general.

You will also strengthen ties to the Leica store and meet folks. We had one person in the class with us that had never shot digital before too, they were a film shooter. I can tell you that on top learning a lot about my camera, the class also confirmed to me that the Q is great... this was a feeling I wasn't sure of before taking the class as I had always shot and was used to Canon. Additionally, I'll say that I made a really good friend out of the class. She always invites me to go shoot with her and her friends... agreeing with Bags that the class will connect you. To me, well worth the $200 bucks.
LexS Posted May 2, 2019 Share #11 Posted May 2, 2019 ......."Thorsten Overgaard eBook on the Q."...... a very good book, expensive, so you may subscribe to his news, then wait until you have an offer.

Only way to know is to give it a try. Thanks to all for the encouragement.
