marknorton Posted July 25, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was wondering whether any film users have bought the 16-18-21 Tri-Elmar. Over in M8 land, we get all excited about the 21mm equivalent field of view and it's easy to forget the WATE goes much wider. So, any film users working with it? It would be interesting to see some FF pictures.
Advertisement Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 Hi marknorton, Take a look here Anyone here bought a WATE?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
xjr Posted July 31, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 31, 2007 It certainly appears that in the M8 land a lot of unkind words have been thrown at this gem of an optic starting from filters and attachments to improper fitting leading to brassing and so on and so forth.I am not a digital person and do not have particular opinions on digital photography suffice to say ,perhaps, another form of artistic expression. But back to this phenomenal optic which to my mind is the cheapest optic in the Leica stable for how many lenses can you actually buy for £2480(including the finder) ? Perhaps...two...just ! Well here you get 16,17,18,19,20 and 21 because it is in fact a true zoom!!! Unfortunately the finder has only 16-18-21 positions (plus 24 and 28) but one can always improvise. A lot of people have said that f4 is slow but, folks,seriousely.........now. And others have compared it with the Zeiss 15mm ( a true monster both in size and weight) and to the 15mm Voightlander (god help us !) For me this optic merited its own dedicated body (an M7) and its optical quality is unsurpassed at any focal length and any aperture and as for vignetting.....it is after all a wide-wide lense and personally I do not object to it. One does not need to focus..the depth of field is phenomenal...just set the hyperfocal distance and get on with it.As for filters well only the deep yellow for black & white with the filter holder and none with slides. This is a truly great design and if you can find one grab it.
boilerdoc Posted August 1, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 1, 2007 It is a wonderful lens. Both on M8 and film bodies. Ignore those who say otherwise. Amazing piece of optical engineering! steve
marknorton Posted August 1, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted August 1, 2007 Yes, we know it's a great lens, but I'm wondering how many film-only users took the plunge to buy a lens this wide?

luigi bertolotti Posted August 1, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 1, 2007 I hope to see other posts of pics with WATE on film... your first, Martin, is "for fun" but excellent...(Aston Martin ?); do not remember other posts... and the examples from Puts (WATE with film) weren't so interesting as images... sdai Posted August 2, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 2, 2007 16mm really doesn't seem to be that wide as I've imagined. LOL So you guys can still have Scala processed in Germany ... thanks a lot for the pictures!
