My LS4000 was producing very strange results with an unpleasant bloom around image highlights.  Fortunately, Graeme Hardie at Lincoln Scan  was extremely helpful and, for a very reasonable price, has been able to clean the mirror, replace faulty electrics and get the whole thing (including the LS-21 strip film feed) working perfectly.  I can't recommend him too highly!

It's been interesting to go re-visit images in my archive and get BETTER renderings from them now (using Lightroom) than I could when I was working entirely with film.  If you'd like to seem some results of scans from Kodachromes check:

It is good to know that these excellent film scanners can still be serviced. Which software are you using to drive the Nikon scanner these days? I have Nikon Scan installed on the Windows XP partition of a dual-boot Linux&Windows  computer, but I am concerned about the future as the dedicated computer ages.

My LS5000 is still working like a charm but every time I switch it on and it starts making those familiar noises, I wonder if it will be the last time :) Good to know there are still repair options. The one I have always saved for later is http://www.shtengel.com/gleb/Scanners.htm

I use Vuescan for my scans in combination with Negative Lab Pro. On Ebay, I purchased the film roll adapter and slide feeder a year or so ago and love those too !

Hi - I'm using the original Nikon Scan running under Windows 10.  There are some excellent instructions on-line for how to make this work.  Check https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/60767651

I continue to be surprised with the results - and find it much more effective than Vuescan.  I've never thought the cost of Silverfast was justified.

I'm pleased to hear that Nikon Scan can still be run under Windows 10. I'm still trying to find a good source of information on how to get it it working using WINE with Linux.

I also run an LS4000 ED Coolscan on my late model iMac (with OS 10.13.6 - High Sierra) - Vuescan is very effective interface software with recent hardware IMHO

The original Nikon software is unusable in my situation - way too outdated.
