M8 - File Problem

This is a repost really. Only Carsten answered originally (Thanks Carsten), probably 'cos it was the weekend.

I have just been out and taken about 40 pictures (various lenses). They are clearly visible on the LCD on the back of the M8.

I've transferred them via a card reader to my Mac but can't read the files.

The files are there on the card and can clearly be seen as L1000233.dng etc. both on the camera and on the computer, but the computer shows the DNG file but no image. Adobe Bridge CS3 shows the file but not the image.

The other images taken the day before can be seen on the LCD and the computer.

I have the latest Mac software, lightroom 1.1, Photoshop CS3 etc.

I've now taken another picture, transferred it via card reader and hey ho, it is read perfectly.

Is this a one off abberation? Has anyone come across this before? Can I recover what seem to be good files?

How is it the file I took at home is readable?

Most of the major card makers e.g. San Disk, Lexar etc supply, either free with the card or downloadable from their website, file recovery software for their cards. As long as the files show the requisite number of bytes as Jaap said, that should work. Are you reformatting the card in the M8 after each download, as if not, you should be doing this. The only time I had bad card data, on my sony R1 not on my M8, was after I had filled a card and then deleted the files on the card reader but not reformatted in the camera. If you can't find the software, PM me with an email address and I can send you RescuePro the San disk software.

Thanks for reply Jaapv.

File sizes look perfectly normal. They look great on the camera but I can't get them off.

What error message do you get when you try to open the files?

Sounds like the kind of problem I had with another brand camera when I failed to turn off the camera (which was in sleep mode) when I removed the card. Doing that apparently messed up something in the file structure and I wasn't able to get functional versions of the earlier files, but subsequent ones worked fine. After reformatting the card, everything was fine.

You may want to try one of the commercial file recovery programs. It's probably best not to write any more data to the card till you've exhausted your options.

Someone will pop up with the name of the most respected file recovery program; most don't do a very good job, and only one has a generally good reputation.

Good luck!

OK chaps. I have tried everything - Rescue Pro, Capture One Pro, Adobe DNG converter et al. None of them work.

It's so frustrating seeing the images on the camera but not on the computer. I'll have to do them all again.

Steve,

I suspect, I am afraid that the DNG's are totally scrambled and that all you have left readable are the thumbnails that the M8 generates internally to display on the LCD. Not really what you want to hear.

Also, if one rescue package doesn't work then don't assume all is lost.

I managed to get in a similar situation with ALL the photos I took on my honeymoon (several hundred) and had to try 4 or 5 software solutions until I finally recovered my photos. I will have to check back to see which was the best of the bunch I tried.

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't started this. I've just tried to connect directly via USB, not through a hub, to the computer - nothing. The camera is not detected by the computer (Mac). I must be doing something terribly wrong.

Steve,

Really, try photorescue before anything else. I've had a couple occasions in which my data seemed to have disappeared from my cards. Sometimes the photo's would show up in my camera but not on the computer, sometimes the seemed to have disappeared completely once i had taken the card out of the camera, Sometimes my computer couldn't recognize my card, but Photorescue has always recovered everything on my cards. Even stuff that had been there for ages and should have been gone after several times of formatting.

That is not unknown - I suggested it as an act of desparation. In my case, on Windows XP, it recognizes the camera and the files, but will only download/open the thumbnails. On another PC with exactly the same configuration there is no problem transferring the files at all. I doubt you are doing anything wrong; it is the terrible cyberbug biting you....

OK - I give up. I've taken Hans's advice and tried photorescue. It doesn't see the files on the card.

Thanks to all who tried to assist - it's becoming obvious that I'm completely mad and I didn't take those pictures after all. Maybe it was all a dream.:(

Steven,

That puzzled me at first - you don't have a problem. you just have to start the program Image Capture from Apps then iPhoto. You only have ever to do it once and then it will run automatically in the background after that.

When was the last time you restarted your Mac?

Have you repaired permissions recently (using Disk Utility)?

Have you installed all the latest software updates?

Have you tried downloading the combined updater to the latest System? (Sometimes, the incremental updates don't work properly.)

Have you tried shooting with another card?

Have you tied dragging the icon of the card onto your hard disk icon, thereby duplicating everything on the card, and reading the images from the HD?

Well I never.

Thanks to Wilson for the Image capture information. Where does it say this in the manual? It worked perfectly. The files are still buggered though; they are transferred directly from the camera but still not read.

Andy - I have tried all of the stuff you mention. The problem has not been reproduced. The same card has my old pix on it, the dodgy files and new pictures taken today. So in effect, I have 70 good old pix, 40 dodgy pix and then 30 new pix. Maybe that bit of the card is dodgy itself. But......if that was the case, why did it all happen on one shoot and then go back to normal. Spooky.
