Just to clarify: The way I read Stuart's contribution "out of sync" was in reference to the retail price if the body itself, not with regard to its existing or non-existing USP.

I guess that is more that I meant. I agree with Xiaubauu that it was revolutionary at release, and could justify it's price in the market. I think even now, they could have a very good and reasonable place in the market, but their prices would have to come down to support it. Or, they would have to go further towards matching similarly priced Phase One or Hasselblad models... In other words, if they want over 20,000 dollars for the camera, for similar money you could get a Phase or Hasselblad camera which is perhaps one generation behind the bleeding edge, but still has a number of technical advantages over the S.

Phase One sensor is not one generation behind the cutting edge now with the IQ4150... it's the cutting edge. Albeit the firmware is no where near finished...

On Leica vs other manufacturers' pricing: In Full Frame and APSC space Leica priced itself out the competition right from the start. SL vs Z7, A7Riii, you name it. In the MF world, that was different in 2008/9. I am wondering whether Marketing sees the S now similar to their smaller format offerings.

Yeah, I think they’re going to milk every last €€€ with a 20K+ price and then slowly, in who knows how long, we’re going to see ex demo and open/white box S3’s being offered.

BTW, I held a Panasonic S1R in my hands today. I did not go looking for it, I went to pick up a new FujiFilm Instax printer. My old one stopped functioning after 2,5 years and FujiFilm gave me a full refund, talking about nice service. So I bought a new one and still had change to buy 20 sheets of paper.

My first impression was that I did not like it, the Panasonic I mean, very clunky. It really is big, it almost feels as big in my hands as my S2-P and it’s very sharp edged too, with buttons cluttered all over the place, which makes it harder for me to handle than an S. The image in the viewfinder is large, but it looks very video. Nothing like our gorgeous optical viewfinder.

Too bad our lenses won’t work with it though, because it could perhaps be a nice backup camera or it could be interesting for having an extra FOV with high resolution option with me in the field, but it feels nothing like an S.

Is it now confirmed that their lenses won't work with it? I know they do not AF, but what about aperture?

 

Xiaubauu -- when I said one step behind the cutting edge I meant that you can get a Phase One that is not the latest IQ4 150 for a price that is much closer to full retail of the S3. For example, you could get a 100mp Phase One Iq3 camera for a price that is cheaper than the estimated full retail of the S3, and in that case the Phase would still outperform the S3. Sorry if all that was confusing.

Not that I know, I bumped that question in the other thread a while ago but there's no answer yet. The shop I went to didn't have the S to L adapter.

Okay. I am getting the IQ4150 pretty soon. I am still feeling iffy with the no trigger connection to the copal shutter thingy they are now doing. The Firmware is not even half way complete.

I would love to see a large Instax printer. 

For me, an A4 format or even a little bit less would be OK.

That would be great, it's such a lovely printing system with interesting effects and a very analog feel to the prints. The Leica Sofort introduced me to Instax and I really like it.
