Canary Wharf

Had to go down to Canary Wharf in East London today on an errand. Took the trusty D-LUX 2 with me. Incidentally, since owning this neat and very portable camera I am inclined to take it with me whenever I can.

I don't know what lead me to try these shots as monochrome but I think they are most striking and effective.

On a rather sad note, as I was taking the picture of One Canada Square a security guard suprised me and told me that I was not allowed to take photographs. I think we can all work out why.

That really is sad. Canary Warf is a wonderful place to photograph. When I've been there I've seen many many tourists busy snapping away with point and shoots including flash without them being told to stop. I have heard you're not allowed to photograph in that area although I haven't seen any notices forbidding it. I believe about 2yrs ago plans were discovered for a 911 with that building.

What is so ironic is there are sites with hi-res satellite pictures where you can fly around the area complete with 3D elevation data. I've used them to find the best views.

Bob.

Big -

These are most impressive, espcially #1, for its imposing angle and building size, its light and the sky. Exceptionally well done. I've been to Canary Warf (though not for about two years), but I don't understand what is specifically in this area that guards would tell you not to take photos. Please explain.

Thanks for all the positive comments.

I'm returning to photography after a 20 year absence and I have to say that the invention of the digital camera and the ability to 'develop' without the use of chemicals and all the attendant paraphanealia is the driver.

I processed both shots in Lightbox for which I will be first in line when it is finally released as a commercial product.

I'm not too sure why I was told not to photograph. I assumed it was a security issue. A second security guard seemed to imply that the building owners did not want any commercial photography on site. As I could fairly claim to be a 'tourist' that seemed to satisfy him. No tripods, though.

Given the benefit of working with digital I am getting strangely drawn towards the impending M8........ which I think will require a second mortgage on the house :-)
