trs Posted July 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got a new shutter release cable (Leica Manual). However, I am having problem pressing halfway through for metering. I slowly press, but before I see meting information on the view finder screen, shutter releases. Any tricks? Thanks. -tanka
Advertisement Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Hi trs, Take a look here Next Cable Release Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted July 23, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 23, 2007 I have 2 cable releases of the old style, although new, and haven't seen this problem. I can actually feel the stops when pressing the cable plunger. But normally if I'm using a CR I never look through the VF when actuating the shutter. Focus and remove eye from VF, grab cable, Press to first stop (to make sure the meter is active) then all the way to release. Unlike a SLR/DSLR with a rangefinder there is no need to cover the VF window to stop light from coming in from it that could affect the meter reading. trs Posted July 23, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted July 23, 2007 I will try more on tighting and loosing the screw and see if I can feel. Once cable is attatched, I need to see through view finder to meter when in manual mode, for example for second shot on different subject. Thanks for the reply, now I at least know it does work for half way push. I will keep practicing. -tanka

I'll have to check this when I get back home and my tripod. Even with the cable attached you can activate the meter by pressing the outside edge of the shutter release button or pressing down the end of the cable screwed into the button. trs Posted July 24, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted July 24, 2007 Thanks Ed. I tried it again. If I press very soft after I get the feel of it getting some pressure, it seems to do it. I think I am set now. -tanka
wlaidlaw Posted July 24, 2007 Share #6 Posted July 24, 2007 Soon after I got the M8, I posted how much nicer it would have been if Leica had given us a Contax style electrical cable release rather than mechanical. After all the shutter release is just an electrical switch. This would have simplified the shutter release and maybe enabled them to give it a nicer feel. You could then have nice options like a shutter release on the top of the grip handle. I have tried a pneumatic release on the M8 but it did not work very well and I have gone back to using my elderly Minox mechanical one. Tiny stepper motors are so cheap now, I wonder if someone could make an aftermarket, screw on, electrical release for the M8. I thought there might be a universal release like this on the market but I could not find anything. Wilson

Wilson A electronic cable shutter release is something I am very glad Leica did not included on the M8. My Nikon D200 has one of those and it is still very hard to find one for sale anywhere. I got lucky and found one used on ebay and got it for just under list price. I took a short trip to Asheville NC one weekend to take some night shots with both my M8 and M3 and of course I forgot my cable release, I had taken it out of my bad to take some shots around my house and forgot to put it back in the bag. I didn't realize this until I got to Asheville. I dropped into a photo store in Asheville and bought another. Couldn't do that with a Leica proprietary electronic model. jaapv Posted July 24, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 24, 2007 A stiff cable release will produce an effect like the OP. I had to take one of mine apart and give it a bit of silicon grease to make it work properly on the M8.

Jaap, Thanks for the thought - I could not get mine apart, so I just screwed the camera end of my old Minox all metal wire mesh cable release into the nozzle of a can of WD40 and pushed the button. Apart from now having to put my shirt straight into the wash, the cable release is running like silk. It has the advantage that it has a little screw in/out collar for a T exposure (with the camera set to . If you screw the collar out, the shutter opens when you push the main central control but does not shut until you touch the collar. With the collar screwed in, it is just a normal cable release. jaapv Posted July 24, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 24, 2007 I don't think WD40 washes out. Burn the shirt before your wife sees it
girphoto Posted July 24, 2007 Share #11 Posted July 24, 2007 Hello All Since I started the Thread on Cable Releases, I went out yesterday and purchased an after market TUNDRA 20" cable release with locking wheel (Photos to follow later). The top of the releaase has wings for you to put your fingers behind and you can feel the tension as you start to release the shuttle. For my application, I can pre-set the locking wheel to lock and when I need the camera M8 to run unattended, I set the M8 to "C" press in the plunger on the release and let it shoot. I am using 2gig Sand Disk Ultra Cards (right now you can get them 2 for 1 at Calumet Photo for $34.99 + Shipping) and set to DNG + Jpeg. From my testing yesterday, this is the way to go wuth the M8. A very nice little release for the Money (I paid $17.95 /US). Gary Gary I. Rothstein, Photography
