They were taken in Baja California in a little artist community about 45 miles north of Los Cabos. They are of the Hotel California of Eagles fame. Comments are welcome. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 Hi barjohn, Take a look here M8 Images with Minolta 40mm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Photoskeptic Posted July 22, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 22, 2007 Not the sharpest lens around, IMO, but good rendition nevertheless. Thanks for posting.
blakley Posted July 22, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 22, 2007 Mine looks as sharp to me as the DR Summicron 50 - not too shabby.
barjohn Posted July 22, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted July 22, 2007 I can't see much difference in sharpness between it and my 50/cron. Maybe my new 28/2.8 will be sharper and my new 90 cron appears to be very sharp. The lighting here was tricky as the bar was very dark and the outside windows were facing bright sunlight. The lobby was lit from the doorway and a little brighter. Must not be any Eagles fans here. I thought you might enjoy seeing the famous Hotel California from which you might never return. And here is a picture from the front of the hotel in case you were in doubt. Welcome, dear visitor! Jack_Flesher Posted July 22, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am curious which Minolta lens it is. It must not be the new minolta mount, is it?thanks. --tanka Minolta teamed with Leica several years back and made the minolta CLE about the same time Leica made its compact CL. As such, Minolta made a few M-mount lenses, notably the 40 that sold with the body, a 28 and a 90. These lenses will mount and focus on any M camera. In all regards, the Minola design CLE lenses are very good performers, though with different signatures than Leica glass.
barjohn Posted July 22, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted July 22, 2007 I have modified my 40 to be coded as a 35 cron and changed the tab so it brings up the 35 frame line. It uses a 40.5mm B&W UV/IR filter. It has been my standard lens; however, I just received a Leica 28/2.8 Asph (in fact I now have two of them and will be selling one. I ordered one and then thinking it would not get to me in time form my vacation bought a second one from a RFF member only to get the first one first so now two) and I haven't had a chance to use it much but it may become my standard lens. My 50 cron type 4 is my least used lens and my new 90 cron is seeing more use. I find the 50 cron (an excellent lens) either too cropped when close to my subjects or lacking adequate magnification when too far from a subject. The 90 works very nicely whether it is across the pool or a far distant scene as a mild tele and the 40 has been a great all around. I have debated on whether the 35 cron or 35 lux would be a better all around but have been concerned with all of the back focusing issues prevalent with these lenses. They were taken in Baja California in a little artist community about 45 miles north of Los Cabos. They are of the Hotel California of Eagles fame. Comments are welcome. Are you sure that it is Minolta manufacture and not Leitz? I would suggest you consult a CL expert on the true genesis of that particular lens. I had a CL and a few lenses when that product line was new and, as I recall, Minolta designed and built the body with an M-mount and Leitz did the glass. They may have branded the bodies (and maybe the lenses) both Minolta and Leica for marketing reasons. Although I was not completely happy with the CL, I wish I had kept it. But it really doesn't matter; if the lens works for you, that is all that counts. Philip Kozloff

Philip Kozloff I think for a time Leitz built all the lenses but then Minolta started building them also to Leitz specs and with the minolta name. There are small differences between the Leitz Wetzlar Summicron-C 40mm f/2 and the Minolta 40mm f/2. For one thinig the Leitz lens has a smaller filter thread then 40.5. I have a Summicron-C 40 and no hood for it. I found a Minolta 40.5 hood on ebay and bought it. It does not fit the Leitz lens. Nice shots John. wattsy Posted July 23, 2007 Share #13 Posted July 23, 2007 I thought you might enjoy seeing the famous Hotel California from which you might never return. I dare say that the claim regarding the Hotel's fame is a bit of wishful thinking on the part of the hotel management. The album cover features a picture of the Beverly Hills Hotel and the song itself is full of metaphoric nonsense that has little to do with hotels. barjohn Posted July 23, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted July 23, 2007 Here are a few more fun shots. The lens does a pretty good job considering I didn't use a lens hood and it was bright and sunny. lct Posted July 23, 2007 Share #16 Posted July 23, 2007 None of the M-Rokkor 40/2 have been made by Leitz or Leica AFAIK. Both were made in Japan. - The M-Rokkor for Minolta CL looks like the Summicron-C 40/2 for Leica CL: about 125g, monocoated, round focus tab, Series 5.5 filters, sloping focus cam. - The M-Rokkor for Minolta CLE is lighter (about 105g), multicoated, has a square focus tab, a flat focus cam and uses 40.5mm filters. barjohn Posted July 23, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted July 23, 2007 Mine says M-ROKKOR Minolta Serial # 2020716 and has a focus tab that looks like the corner of a square. It says Lens Made in Japan on the lower part of the barrel and uses the 40.5mm filter. By the way, the Britt is right, it is not the hotel made famous by the Eagles but rather an urban legend started by a real-estate promoter in Todos Santos (the location of the hotel) that has lingered on because it looks like it should be the one described in the song. Here is the link to the facts which are interesting in themselves and includes a copy of a fax by Don Henley. barjohn Posted July 23, 2007 Author Share #18 Posted July 23, 2007 By the way it does fit the lyrics: "Hotel California" On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell And I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell' Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say... Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place (Such a lovely place) Such a lovely face Plenty of room at the Hotel California Any time of year (Any time of year) You can find it here It is on a dark dessert highway and near a mission unlike the Beverley Hills hotel which is not on a dark dessert highway nor near any mission bells. wattsy Posted July 23, 2007 Share #19 Posted July 23, 2007 It is on a dark dessert highway and near a mission unlike the Beverley Hills hotel which is not on a dark dessert highway nor near any mission bells. True, but isn't the whole song a metaphor for hard drug use or something like that?
barjohn Posted July 24, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted July 24, 2007 It is always open to non-literal interpretations when looked at metaphorically but taken literally it is easy to see how the urban legend could have been developed and spread. Further, considering Don's fax, one might conclude that he was jealously guarding the Eagles commercial IP identity and property and concerned about others capitalizing on the use of their name and reputation. Sometimes we see metaphors where the author was simply trying to tell a straight story with no metaphor intended. Literature professors are very prone to this phenomenon as aptly illustrated in the movie the Graduate during his oral final exam.
