Anyone having experience/info regarding the optical quality of the (large/heavy) 400mm f2.8 APO-Telyt-R? I am primarily thinking about the non-modular version. How is the sharpness/contrast wide open, and at f4? Is the lens prone to flare? How does it work with the 1.4x APO-Extender-R? etc...

It appears to be two version of the lens, #11256 and #11260 (https://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/400mm_f/2.8 APO-Telyt-R). Any difference(s)?

I have searched a little, but without too much info; I have not checked Erwin Put's various compellations, though.

Extremely high resolving in the center, slightly falling off to the corners due to chromatic aberration , improves @ 5.6 but will remain to a certain extent and get softer in the field. It is at its (spectacular) best wide open and at 4.0. According to Erwin Puts "the stratosphere of optical performance for this type of lens" The 1.4x extender was developed for this lens and will not produce any noticeable degradation. You cannot go wrong with this lens - except in the matter of weight ;) .

Bower lists 11260 as the 400/2.8 in production from 1992 to 1996. The modular system was introduced at Photokina 1996, as was the R8 camera and the ROM system. So I don't know that it's likely that 11260 would be a ROM lens.
