AndreasG Posted March 11, 2019 Share #29 Posted March 11, 2019 (edited) Nice photos indeed, I spent 27 years of my life in Japan and still see the daily life - now and then - through the eyes of a foreigner. Right now, digging through piles of old photos from the 80ies, all taken with a M4-P or M6 with various lenses. Charleston, Roppongi Welcome, dear visitor! dalehuang Posted March 12, 2019 Author Share #32 Posted March 12, 2019 Such wonderful shots Andreas! I guess time can never truly remove those tinted lenses (no pun intended) through which we see our homes away from home.

AndreasG Posted March 12, 2019 Share #34 Posted March 12, 2019 Hi Dale, thank you, next to my old film M-Leicas I also go digital with a M10-D, still using the old lenses without 6 Bit encoding. Recently I began to "collect" old houses and store fronts in the Tokyo Kanda district, where still such objects are left, but how long? Past week I returned from Japan to Germany, but I return to Japan in May again. Seems, you too travel to japan quite frequently? You own a rare Sonnetar 50/1.1 from Miyazaki, how does it compare with the recent 7artisans 1.1 lens, any idea? greetings, Andreas Kanda, M10-D, Elmarit 2,8/28 Welcome, dear visitor! dalehuang Posted March 12, 2019 Author Share #37 Posted March 12, 2019 (edited) Hello Andreas, sadly I only visit Japan as frequently as my schedule allows (which isn't as often as I'd like), but I'm fond of the country all the same; I too am struck by the unique quaintness of the place and by how it's at times so blisteringly exciting, and at other times so movingly serene. Truly a land of beautiful contradictions, I feel. Hopefully these old houses storefronts which you "collect" remain preserved, if not in real life then forever in your photographs! Ah yes I too prefer using "pre-modern" lenses -- all the glass I have are pre-ASPH. Not the greatest fan of the clinical perfection of modern lenses...but that's just personal taste. As for the Sonnetar vs the 7Artisans, I cannot speak definitively for the differences in image quality because I've never used the latter. I hear that the main differences are that the Sonnetar produces a more glowy/dreamy look at f1.1 and vignettes more (and is perhaps a tiny bit less saturated). Ergonomics-wise, I think the Sonnetar bests the 7Artisans in terms of size and weight, but I don't think it's as robustly built (as far as I can tell). The Sonnetar's lens body (which turns during focus) and aperture ring both turn a little too easily, and it's possible to accidentally unscrew the front section of the lens in winter if you're not careful (the lubricants thicken in the cold, and rapidly adjusting focus by twisting the barrel instead of using the focus tab can end up dismantling the lens). But one gets used to it eventually, and it's actually quite a delightful lens to use. Perhaps one day I'll get the chance to use the 7Artisans too and give a more comprehensive comparison Dale Edited March 12, 2019 by dalehuang
