The finder has been cleaned and is nice and clear! No more moisture. However, as predicted by plaidshirts they gave me the base plate they had listed for sale separately as Excellent +, which with the massive ding on it clearly isn't. I understand it's hard to obtain them these days, but I asked if they'd give me some money back in compensation - nope. Asked if they'd give me at least a roll of film as compensation - nope. The younger tanned guy in there had a seriously poor attitude and said you can have the original back instead if you want! Considering I traded in a mint IIIg with 2.8 collapsible elmar, for £400 which they then sold for £1250 (!) you'd hope for better service. I then reiterated that they'd sold it to me with the wrong base plate, that it wasn't functioning correctly without it and they agreed to give me a single roll of ilford delta as compensation. And funnily enough... Getting the camera back and inspecting it, I noticed the dent aligns with a slight dent on the body in the same place. So this was either A. dropped whilst in their care or B. actually the original that was meant to be with it, that they tried to sell separately?? It's got a bit of play side to side that the other plate didn't, so we'll see if that affects things once i've put a roll through it. Either way, when the camera is out of it's 6 month guarantee there is little to no chance i'll be taking it there should it ever need repairing, and I think i'll be buying my future glass from Red Dot and Aperture! If so I'd call the CC company and see if they can reverse the charge and get you a refund. The camera was obviously badly misrepresented. Advertisement Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Hi logan2z, Take a look here M4 base plate - missing 'basket'?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted February 6, 2019 Share #22 Posted February 6, 2019 A leopard doesn't change its spots as they say!! Good old Classic Camera and their unique 'customer service'. I haven't been there for years and wondered what they were like these days, but obviously just as bad as back then. That's clearly the original baseplate that should have been with the camera. I'd be worried about light leaks from the dented area, as it's dented the actual body casting too. To make sure, shine a bright lamp at that area from all directions (with film in the camera) to make sure it's absolutely light tight. If not you have a reason to return the camera again. As for your lllg and lens, good grief, they pretty much stole that from you, but you must have been happy with the deal at the time?
M9reno Posted February 6, 2019 Share #23 Posted February 6, 2019 I’d return for a refund or credit card chargeback and do your best to forget about these idiots. There are many, many nicer M4s out there.
zookeeper Posted February 6, 2019 Author Share #24 Posted February 6, 2019 Sadly I paid for it on a debit card! It was up for £800 when I bought it and PX'd the IIIg. Got the whole 'no one buys these much any more' spiel on it and lo and behold they'd sold it for 3x the px within a week. I figured it was an ok deal at the time and I desperately wanted something I didn't have to trim the leaders on!... Live and learn I guess. The M4 is a good shooter otherwise, and i've been quite enamored with it being more accurate than any other camera i've owned... I did buy it to be a user so I guess it'll just be a case of seeing whether it's gonna cause light leak issues or not!

If you are going to keep the camera, I would think a good tech could dress the ding in the camera body out.

I thought the chassis is cast metal which tends to only bend once before it cracks?
