Well Mark with regards to the viewfinder we are clueless as to what's in the top hat, and like all good magicians Leica is keeping us on the edge of our seats. Its either going to be a tweaked M7 finder or something we hadn't considered. But perhaps the total silence is because it is something really novel and they don't want to spoil the party.

Let's hope so...

Well, I'll call it a day on this thread...unless we get back to the silver-vs.-black question.

If people want to know which horse runs fastest, they don't debate the merits of the horses based on breed or leg length or color - they have a horse race and see which one wins.

In this case, the horse race (what kind of viewfinder Leica is putting in the M8) has already been run - we're just waiting for Leica to announce the winner.

"Come on, .72x. Move yer bloomin arse!" - to borrow from My Fair Lady (Ascot scene).

47 days....

Rumour has it that horse has gone lame, the rank outsider "Variable Viewfinder" is now the favourite...

As for silver and black (to maintain Andy's interest and contribution), plain black for me (what I believe is called "little black number" in ladies fashion circles), but I might think about silver for the second one, especially if it could have some alternative leather...

Well, as I said before - my first reaction was "industrial black chrome - soon worn to a nice gunmetal finish. Silver is for fondlers." Plus it makes it easier to hide it in the checked baggage. =8^o

..but I dunno - silver might add a 'cutesy' factor that would allow me to take shots without seeming "serious" and threatening.

OTOH I don't much like the silver chrome Leica has been using since 1990 - too paint-like. Not at all the same as an M3/2/4 finish.

I'll probably chicken out and just get the black...

* As a consequence the price will be much lower than anyone expected, leading to very strong initial sales and a quick return for R&D.

John

The new Nikon D80 is 10.2Mpix with AF, 3-frames/sec and multi-focus-areas and it listed price is $1000. The M8 is, at least, 4 times that price without 4 times the benefits. I do not think the "price is much lower than anyone expected."

What on earth does that comment have to do with this topic - or am I missing something ? I have seen estimates $5000-6000 so it clearly is cheaper. Thank goodness everyone doesn't want a Chevrolet even if it is cheaper.

Arthur, the M8 will not stand comparison with cameras like the D80 if all you want to do is tick spec-sheets. I am quite sure the D80 will be a fine camera for those who buy it - more than they may ever need - but it's that final 10% of image quality, the build quality, the quality of Leica's lenses which can be used with it which will more than justify the price.

If Leica have been able to bring the camera home at a slightly lower cost than we were expecting ($5000 + tax, €4000 + tax), well done them. The camera will be a smash and the money I'll save will go towards a wider lens or (he said, pulling a face), an aux finder.

I've seen this thought from several people (that Leicas are less conspicuous and threatening.) The last time I saw it, I got my M7, which I'd only had for a couple of weeks, and stood in front of a dressing mirror. To me, the M7 looked as professional as a D2x or a 1DsII. It doesn't really look like an amateur camera; it looks too crafted, like a piece of fine clockwork. When you see a small digital Canon or Pentax, you think, "snapshot." But when you see an M7, even with new eyes, it looks too **worked** to be amateur. It's like seeing a gold Rolex or an expensive fountain pen or even a designer suit: it gives off a vibe, and that vibe does not say "amateur" nor is it partiuclarly inconspicuous.

Hi Arthur, when I bought my used M6 for £1000 I could have bought a new Canon or Nikon for a fifth of that. Both cameras would have used the same film, was the Leica worth the premium? In my case yes. Leicas have always been expensive. These days that's the price you pay if you want a low volume, highly engineered product.

There is also the not insubstantial matter that the D80 isn't a rangefinder ;-)
