jlancasterd Posted August 8, 2006 Share #21 Posted August 8, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I feel like a kid at Christmas waiting to open presents. Leica is more tight lipped than Apple regarding future products. Except that Apple has, in the last 2 days, not only announced details of the new Mac Pro Quad Xeon replacements for the Mac G5 machines but also put up a 'taster' for OSX 10.5 'Leopard'... Advertisement Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Hi jlancasterd, Take a look here M8 official orders. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
john_f Posted August 8, 2006 Share #22 Posted August 8, 2006 Mark, Yes, that's it. It's the ISO dial on the back! I wonder how much else is outsourced.
grober Posted August 8, 2006 Share #23 Posted August 8, 2006 I never really imagined that I would potentially be in the market for the digital M, but since my lab just lost the last two rolls of film I dropped off, maybe this digital stuff is a viable option. The downward spiral of most labs is EXACTLY what compelled me to pre-order an M8 from my dealer in June. I know there's considerable post-processing to be done with digital images AND there are also massive issues with archival storage of the final image, but with an M8 I won't need to worry about the film getting mangled or lost by a 20-something's non-caring attitude in the lab. -g
john_f Posted August 8, 2006 Share #24 Posted August 8, 2006 John, My local Leica dealer told me two weeks ago that the launch of the M8 digital will be the biggest and most important product introduction for Leica since its first M3 and Leicaflex (some 50 years ago). Leica is pulling out all the stops for this. Expect a BIG marketing campaign ..!
stunsworth Posted August 8, 2006 Share #25 Posted August 8, 2006 I know there's considerable post-processing to be done with digital images... It depends. Even if you shoot RAW you can use a program like iView Media Pro to view the images without any processing, then just process the images that you are interested in. I save a lot of time compared to when I used film and scanned everything. It seems strange to speak of film in the past tense, but I haven't shot any film at all this year. Even though I shoot with an SLR, I miss the M3/6 viewfinder and can't wait to try the M8.
sean_reid Posted August 8, 2006 Share #26 Posted August 8, 2006 I find that digital gives me a dramatically faster workflow than film ever did. Cheers all, Sean

grober Posted August 8, 2006 Share #29 Posted August 8, 2006 I suspect carefully placed leaks about the M8 will start flowing from Leica by the end of next week. Surely, many more in early September. If anyone sees some info on this, please share the wealth with your follow addicts on this forum. -g
hyper67 Posted August 8, 2006 Author Share #30 Posted August 8, 2006 One more thing my dealer asked was if I wanted to order an additional battery for the camera at approx 76 Euros...
humanized_form Posted August 8, 2006 Share #31 Posted August 8, 2006 anyone know which USA Leica dealers are taking advance orders for the M8? i plan to use both an M7 and an M8. i will continue shooting color slides with the M7 as it is a joy to do so, and when my local same day E6 processing vanishes the M8 will take over, as i will grow tired of waiting days just to see my images. i think the biggest thing i will miss when slides disappear are the great straight out of the camera images, no post processing(beyond E6) required. Goldie Posted August 8, 2006 Share #32 Posted August 8, 2006 Concerning out-sourcing of components I am certain that Leica have been outsourcing most of their metal bashing bits for many years. The range of skills and machine tools to produce such a range of components would challenge the finances of a much bigger company, never mind a company with the production runs that Leica has. Leica spends its capital where it has to; glass grinding and calibration.
Goldie Posted August 8, 2006 Share #33 Posted August 8, 2006 This is an extract from a PM I received from someone very much "in the know": "I can assure you that the M8 is a worthy successor to M7, MP etc - but still, no pictures for the public!" I recall Dr Ralph Nebe (Leica head of marketing) being quoted in the lastest Leica World as saying "It will come and it will be wonderful". A bit messianic perhaps but Leica have never marketed on the basis of hyperboly. We can all hope and pray!

jrc Posted August 9, 2006 Share #38 Posted August 9, 2006 And I got the chrome-or-black question from my dealer, with my pre-order. JC
etrigan63 Posted August 9, 2006 Share #39 Posted August 9, 2006 Well I added my name to the list at Camerawest, even though I live in Miami, FL. Going to trade in my Canon 1D Mk 2 plus lenses for the M8. Hopefully the image quality will be what we've come to expect from Leica.
marknorton Posted August 9, 2006 Share #40 Posted August 9, 2006 What may also be significant is that people are not being asked what viewfinder magnification they want - so either there is only one to start with or (just maybe) the viewfinder has variable magnification and you don't need to choose! That would be good!
