scottygraham Posted November 29, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought my M9 when it first came out in 2009. I have never had a problem with the SD card until now. For some reason, I now get a message on the screen that says, "attention no SD card". I have tried several different cards that all worked in the past (currently using the sandisk 32g extreme pro), but none of them work now. I was told to update the firmware, but the first step in updating the firmware is to format the SD card in the camera. I cannot format the SD Card when the camera doesn't recognize the card (format is greyed out). If I can't do the first step in updating the firmware, how do I update the firmware?? Anyone else have this problem??
Advertisement Posted November 29, 2018 Posted November 29, 2018 Hi scottygraham, Take a look here M9 doesn't recognize SD card...how to update firmware?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pixelman Posted November 29, 2018 Share #2 Posted November 29, 2018 Try using this utility to format your SD card on a Mac or pc. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ also make sure you didnt lock the SD card by mistake.
scottygraham Posted November 29, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted November 29, 2018 Thanks, Pixelman....I will give this a try....but this will only format the card, correct? You think the M9 will then "see" the SD card once it is externally formatted? Already checked that the card was not locked...it was not.
jaapv Posted November 29, 2018 Share #4 Posted November 29, 2018 First try another card. If that does not solve the problem, it might be that there is a problem with the card slot in the camera. First give the card contacts a wipe with contact spray and whilst still moist insert into the camera a couple of times. If that doesn't help, one of the contacts inside the slot might be bent. scottygraham Posted December 1, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted December 1, 2018 OK....this is getting weird. I plugged in my 16GB Sandisk Ultra card ( I had read that the Leica doesn't like large capacity SD cards), and finally my M9 saw the card. I was able to format the card in camera. I then took the card out, and saved the new firmware update on the top level of the card. I put the card back into my camera, and now I am back to "Attention NO SD Card" message. I cleaned out the slot with air, inserted several times, and still get the message that there is no SD card. WTF? How could it work one second, and then a minute later not work? I find it hard to believe no one else is having this problem? Anyone?? Do I have to take my Leica into a service center?
jaapv Posted December 1, 2018 Share #6 Posted December 1, 2018 Cleaning with air won't fix a bad contact.
scottygraham Posted December 1, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted December 1, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) WAIT....it's working again....updated the firmware....took a couple of photos. NOPE....not working again...now back to NO SD Card message...I have no idea what's going on... UPDATE: Now the camera won't even turn on....I think there is something wrong with my power switch...maybe that has been the problem all along...it is not going through whatever the start up sequence is.... jaapv Posted December 1, 2018 Share #8 Posted December 1, 2018 As I said - bad contact. Either by greasy dirt - remedy contact spray (don't blast it into the slot!) or mechanical. Either you manage to reactivate the slot contacts by using a pin - carefully!- or you have to send the camera in for a (not cheap) repair.
scottygraham Posted December 1, 2018 Author Share #9 Posted December 1, 2018 Thanks for your help, Jaapv....I can't even turn my camera on now...I have not touched the SD card slot (other than blowing very low pressure air into it). It was working fine every other time I turned the camera on....seemed to work best if I turned the power switch to C instead of S...for some reason, it worked fine when I did that. But now, I am not getting any power (fresh battery) when I turn the camera on. I think there must be some kind of electrical problem when I turn on the camera... jaapv Posted December 1, 2018 Share #10 Posted December 1, 2018 Bad battery? unlikely again. The only remaining answer is: send it in...
Raid Amin Posted December 1, 2018 Share #11 Posted December 1, 2018 I would send your M9 to Leica for inspection. They can save it.
skuirtgun Posted January 7, 2022 Share #12 Posted January 7, 2022 I know this is an old thread, but what was the final outcome/solution? I am unfortunately having the same issues as above.
