No 28 2.8 ASPH. Other choices?

I am really surprised no one has stepped up and recommended the 24mm 2.8 asph. This is one of the best lenses in the M stable and gives a 32mm effective field of view on the m8. They seem to be on the used market for not much more then the 28mm asph sells for new. A 24mm, 35mm, 50mm combo is an ideal coverage selection in my opinion.

I agree 100%. I was in the same situation in january looking for the 28 Elmarit. I ended up wih the 24 (much helped by the article from Sean Reid). The 24 is my best lens and I stopped missing the 28. Interesting enough I still like my 35 on the M8 allthough I didn't like the 50 on the M6.

I got the relevant information from another forum member how to order the lens mount from zeiss and had it ready when the lens arrived. I now have to find some time to send the mount to John Milich for milling. Lucky we are both in Brooklyn.

Be advised that the only way to pay zeiss is an interbank transfer, which adds to the cost, citibank charge me 25? I think. That plus the euro exchange brought the whole cost closer to 100 dollars, minus coding. worth it tho, I bought it after the price drop at popflash.

Could you post details of how to order the appropriate mount (IIRC it's the one for the 35mm lens) from Zeiss? It would also be useful to know approximately how much it will cost

I see that Leicashop Vienna has the Canadian prototype for this lens available at *only* 8,500 Euros...

I wonder if Solms would 6-bit code it for me? :D

:) Advice from a friend... BUY it, then try the coding... home made ... after all no one can accuse you it's "not original" :D

BTW, I think the cheap prototype is not for an asph lens... more related to the design of the various 28 of the '70-'80s, in mymind...

I'm waiting for my preordered 28 2.8asph almost ten months!:( I have the IR filter in a drawer waiting for it! I mailed Leica explaining my long wait and that I have a 4000 euros camera that I can't use with a wide lens for the last 8 months! They answered me that I have to be patient! And in the near future I'll enjoy a great lens! The difficult thing to understand for me is that my dealer and Leica are unable to give me a date of delivery!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm thinking of the 24mm 2.8 but is near doble price. Looking for this funny "smilies" I don't find the one that is crying.

Cheers!

Anyway I love my M8 and I enjoy the 50mm cron and the 75mm cron so much!

Since these are scarce as hens teeth and none of my normal suppliers have a clue as to when they will be available, I need a 28 or something close pdq. Suggestions? Experiences?

Thanks for all replies.

In the "Rangefinderforum" there are two black Elmarit 28mm f2.8 aspherical for sale.

Thought it might interest you.

Just a brief note on this lens, about which I've made a few disparaging comments. I recently used it extensively in some very flat, heavily overcast light at F2.8-5.6 and it was magnificent in these circumstances. None of the excessive contrast or tonal "crudeness" I've complained about, just a beautiful gray scale and good sharpness (though not sharp like some other lenses). In hard sunlight I've usually found it quite ugly.

Another possibility is buy one of the older versions although these can be hard to find at times. There are several versions. When I looked earlier today, KEH and Igor Reznik each had one in inventory. (I just double checked.)

By happy coincidence, my 28/2.8 (III) returned today from Leica-USA after being coded, about a week ahead of schedule.

I settled for the 28 Color Skopar. Haven't had many opportunities to use it, though, as the weather has not been cooperating.

The 28 ASPH for sale on Rangefinderforum - the guy wants $130 over list price  No thanks.

Totally agree about the virtues of the 24 elmarit. I was lucky to get a 28/2.8 asph at the time I got my M8, very early. I like it a lot. It is quite punchy, contrasty, wonderfully small and light. In situations of flatter light and when I want that punch, I use it. But the 24/2.8 is just exquisite, it has a very unique look to my eye. I prefer it for general landscapes, and like the wider angle for street work. It definitely has more subtle tonal gradations than the 28/2.8. I'm waiting for a filter so it's not being used as much as it will be. If I had to choose, (glad I don't), I'd take the 24 elmarit. best...Peter

And that is a really good lens. The only reason why I sold it is that, when walking past my dealer, I spotted in the window a mint Summicron that some damn fool (bless him) had seen fit to get rid of. I dove in and emerged with the lens, natch – and there are limits to how many lenses I can give shelter too, especially of the same focal length!
