nwphil Posted October 27, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 27, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I have a Leica M8 (1st version) and have been holding to it mostly because it's awesome with an IR filter, love that shutter sound ( I know, weird) and indeed the ccd sensor does bring something special in color mode. However, since I got the M240, it sits without use for long periods. Really don't need to sell it, or trade it, but should I indeed do it? If it was a film camera, likely I would not think about it, but at same time, is it worth to trade for another digital camera? - trying for an Olympus EM-1 mk2, but no luck so far; got several offers, and only one's of some interest would be a Canon 6DII or a Sony A7RII. Open for suggestions, any input...Thanks Phil
Advertisement Posted October 27, 2018 Posted October 27, 2018 Hi nwphil, Take a look here to trade or not to trade. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ko.Fe. Posted October 28, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 28, 2018 (edited) I took used M8 to try after getting NiB, under Leica warranty M-E. I run them one by one and realized it was no need for second digital M. It doesn't mean anything was wrong with M8. In my case M8 was as good as M-E and I just didn't need two digital M. Maybe you are in the same situation. Oly, Canonikons are not even close to any digital M. IMO. Yet, I have Canon 5D MKII and it does the job for different things. Edited October 28, 2018 by Ko.Fe. TomB_tx Posted October 28, 2018 Share #3 Posted October 28, 2018 I keep a 1st gen A7 body for use with long lenses. Since the 1960s I've used an SLR as a companion to my M models, mainly for long lenses and macro, but also more convenient for ultra-wide instead of an accessory finder. I preferred using the A7 with a Pentax-M 20mm to a 21 on my M9 with optical finder. (Of course, M-mount ultra-wides don't do well on the A7 sensor.) However, now with the M10 and 020 Visoflex I've been using a 21 more, and find it quite usable. I have a lot of film-era SLR lenses, including Leica R up through 400mm, and the A7 does very well with them. It became my digital-R solution. nwphil Posted October 28, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted October 28, 2018 Thanks for your replies Yes, I get the point, and actually that's what I have right now - DSLR and the M...and also a m43. The justification to trade the M8 would be indeed either to allow my wife joining me. She used to shoot with the Canon 5DII - mind that she is a P&S user, and took me a while to get her to use it, which has been sold. Not that she was using it much, but she always complained for not having a swivel screen. That's why now, I want a camera that has that. If I would go for the Olympus EM-1 mk2, she will be able to use the lenses I have for the Pen-F; going for the Canon 6Dmk2, the UI is very similar to the 5D2, plenty of lenses to use, and still have some lp-6 batteries around with the Sony, I will need an adapter and it's a new interface ( not as good as Canon's one) - not planing to acquire any native lenses - already have 3 different systems. So, in reality, the 6Dmk2 would be a better choice, but both Sony and Olympus have good selling points. Despite all this, I can keep indeed the M8 with no problem, but at same time, since it's a digital, makes me wonder if indeed is any worth keeping it....not looking to start a collection by any means, however I really like it when I use it. is just that annoys me a bit trading an almost classic for a plastic box with no future per say... stuny Posted October 29, 2018 Share #5 Posted October 29, 2018 If she'd like to post here, and wants a swivel screen, consider the V-Lux 114. She can set it to essentially be a point and shoot.

Well, I solved the problem, gave it to my 16 yo son that is studying photography at school. He keeps it as a jewel (gave him a CV 28 Lens) and love to take pictures with it. charleswang Posted November 15, 2018 Share #7 Posted November 15, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) For me, I've always had one digital M at any point in time. (first digital m was M9, then M240, then M10). I have other cameras but only one M at a time. This works very well for me because: I am not a pro so same-body redundancy is meaningless to me Each digital body is progressively better (at least for me) so I do not miss anything when trade-in/selling my old bodies, which Free up additional funds that can go towards the new body Again, this is just how I like it. I can certainly understand the rationale of having two Ms or even two same generation Ms. I have considered it. The main reason could be the ease of not having to change lenses on the same body. However for that I've opted for using "non-M" M-mounts including: a Leica T with M adapter L and a Epson R-D1. I like this because of the variety of choices, which makes the shooting experience more exciting for me. Other obvious choices are already mentioned in posts above. Hope this is helpful
nwphil Posted December 3, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted December 3, 2018 my apologies for the delayed reply - I was on vacations last month. Truth is, I don't need the funds - just need to put it to use more often. I know some people hate the shutter sound but actually I like it. Thanks guys
