RRS’s L plate fits the SL perfectly and extends the grip in doing so to a more comfortable height. It also stores the tool for removing the vertical component and has a perfectly placed hand strap attachment point.

It’s surprising that the sub-10 USD universal L plates on eBay are “just as good” as the RRS design. The ones I’ve seen on eBay and in person are not even designed specifically for the SL or any other camera so they do not offer the advantages the RRS plates do.

Why dont you give it a try? Only $5, I am sure your can afford it.

Actually I wont say RRS is a perfect fit, a better solution I have seen but find no where to buy  (seems a prototype) has the base slightly wider (1mm I think) than the camera, so that the LCD  screen is protected in the bad luck. Similar to the cell phone protection.

Its pretty clear there is a difference in quality in the universal cheap plates you referenced.

The back screen of the camera does not need protection. I would not want a wider plate. The RRS bottom plate is a perfect fit and looks like it’s part of the camera.

If RRS works perfect for you, then you should take it.  No one can argue with or decide for you on this matter. I can only provide the messages I know of. It's up to each individual.

Well i am going to order the RRS base plate. I will let you all know what i think. It looks good quality certainly.

One question for LD_50. Presumably the RRS plate does not affect the balance of the SL, i.e. it sits stably on a flat surface? Thanks.

It sits a bit higher with the RRS plate attached. It does not stay level with native lenses attached. I don’t recall if it did without the plate attached.

  • 1 year later...

I bought one of those cheap L plates and then realize it interferes with everything from pulling out the battery to adjusting different angles of the tripod. Then I purchased RRS for SL and since then it sits on my camera seamlessly, I even forgot it's there. It has few scratches, and that would be on camera if RSS wasn't mounted. Highly recommended.
