I've given up.
Neither Leica Image Shuttle nor Lightroom allows a stable connection to the SL for tethered shooting.

I bought a Hasselblad X1D for tethered shooting. It works fine and also the WiFi connection to Phocus Mobile is extremly realiable.
I tether the 3F RAWs into Phocus with an automatic export as DNG into the 'Capture' Folder of my Capture One session. C1 is 'hacked' with CaptureFix for Hasselblad and now accepts the Hasselblad DNGs.

Without any experience or knowledge of of the product - but CamFi Pro Plus is possibly one tool that can be used to tether SL to Lightroom and C1.

Yeah, but at least it works for a couple minutes... without using Leica Image Shuttle... which is, you must admit, stunning achievement in 2018!

Off topic (but related): it's known that Leica remote apps never worked well with SL. It disconnects every couple minutes, or when phone goes off, you have to install new profile and start the whole complicated procedure all over again. Leica recently announced a brand new Fotos app, designed to replace all older apps and do the single thing - remote control. But its even worse than previous ones. Except the better UI design, it does not work at all with SL.

All these issues with 3rd party vendors and devices makes me really think if Leica is capable of anything else than making exceptionally great hardware. All this new technology available today is not available to us, SL users. We cannot tether, we cannot use remote apps, HSS in my case, and who knows what else. I'm heartbroken even thinking breaking apart from my Leica, but at the same time, using it exclusively, I feel I'm missing out on other things.

Maybe it's not the best thread for this conversation, but I'd like to hear what others think?

The problem is maybe to use Leica SL exclusively.

So I was always prepared to use other cameras for special tasks, like for flash, for astro or other longtime exposures or automatic repetition or for higher resolution. (e.g. Canon 5Ds for 50mp.)

In the same way I will probably use Panasonic cameras in the future where Leica is not willing to offer features demanded by customers. LENR being optional is such a simple feature and such a nuisance. That’s why I look forward to the implementation of the L-mount alliance. That’s why the announcement of the alliance was such a big and important step forward for me.   👌😎

Thanks for the link. With CamFi you don't need a cable to connect the SL but the cable itself is not the issue. This seems more a problem of the SL Firmware because I don't get a stable connection with both, Leica Image Shuttle and LR.

Unlike Leica, Hasselblad understood and implemented the requirements of a professional workflow. This applies to both wired photography and wireless workflow.

I prefer using the SL rather than the X1D but without these professional features it is unfortunately very limited.

It's always a good idea to be prepared and have options. But Leica promotes the possibility of wired photography, but cannot keep this promise.

I have the same problems here. A stable connection of the Leica SL with Lightroom or Leica Image Shuttle is not possible. Leica promotes the SL with "workflow" and "tethering", but can not fulfill these promises. The problems have been known for more than half a year. Nothing happens. The SL is therefore useless for professional use. If Leica does not move and fix it, I'll get out of the system.

That would be a pity, because the system and the lenses are very good. All this does not help if the basic function "tetherd shooting" is missing and nobody cares. Apparently, Leica is no longer interested in professional users.

Hello Ingo,

I wonder, with The new firmware 3.4 is the problem finally solved ? Or still no improvement ?

If I understand it correctly FW 3.4 is about compatibility with upcoming lenses from L-Mound Alliance partners and Easy Connect to Leica Fotos App (which has still limited features).

Tethered shooting is not mentioned in the release notes.

Not fixed with FW 3.4. I doubt Leica would be interested in fixing the bug. They do not have professional workflow in focus.

Since the  tethered operation experience is rock solid stable with the S007, I wonder if it's not a firmware-solvable issue, that possibly the next iteration (SL2) will work properly via updated internal hardware design... time will tell.

For the time beeing Leica should at least stop advertising this feature for the SL.

What makes you say so? I tether the S007 to LR using the Leica Tethered Plugin. Admittedly, it does not hang / disconnect much nowadays but my problem is that no matter what profile I select in the plugin, it never gets applied on import. So, no luck if I wish to shoot a session in B&W for instance, and let the model and my team see the results coming up on the screen in B&W. I notified Leica of the problem more than two years ago, their reply was that they didn't know if and when it would be fixed! I reminded the Leica person of our email exchange very recently and his reply was that "he was surprised to see a copy of his old email"!   I understand that Leica are working on some tethering solution, perhaps understanding that it would be silly to launch the S3 without it. But I fear it will be another one of their half-baked, unsupported efforts, like their Tethered Plugin.  Talking of which, the LR tethered plugin for Fuji looks identical to the Leica version, but applies profiles with no problem. And since September last year, the Fuji cameras have been supported in Capture One, including for tethering (where profiles and styles can easily be applied during tethering). Leica's complacent attitude makes me furious - I want to continue working with their cameras but I need a functioning tethering solution. And I also want a HSS/HS trigger for Profoto or Elinchrom (I keep writing to Leica about this, too, but again, their reply is that "they do not know if and when this will become available", and make excuses about Leica's "low volumes making it not attractive for the strobe manufacturers"). As it stands, Leica cameras are not fit for most professional / studio use, no matter what Leica say in their advertising. And especially not fit for shooting fashion (on which Leica adverts are focused), as properly functioning tethering and HSS/HS compatibility with leading strobe systems are required, standard and available for all competing systems nowadays.

Ah! I sympathize, and must qualify my statement further in that I don't shoot in the studio. I'm an architectural photog and profiles really don't factor for me given that every shoot location has an ever changing color/light balance. Additionally, I use Leica Image Shuttle, with LRCC, not the plug-in. So my workflow is quite a bit different from yours. I'm sorry that studio shooting is not he same experience as mine, apologize if I misled those that are studio shooters, and I do hope Leica addresses the issues you describe -pretty much an intolerable situation for anymore working in the studio, and really inexcusable at this point given the age of the S camera system.

I've been through all this tether issues described above. Since today it seems to work with the SL (601), Image Shuttle and Capture One. The SL did only two times freeze during a session of more than 100  shots. It looks pretty stable.

These are my my setting:

  • SL (601) with Firmware 3.6
    • No SD-Cards
    • JPG deactivated
    • USB-Connection to PTP
  • Image Shuttle Version 3.6
    • Some issues with the correct font size, but it works
  • original cable with USB 3.0 on the laptop side
  • Windows 10 Laptop
  • Capture One 12
    • Use session, not catalogue
    • Hot folder set active
    • Destination in Image Shuttle is set to Capture folder in C1 session

The main issue seems to be the limited buffer space of the SL. But with the measures above this issue can be worked around. It's not a 100% solution but maybe 90%+ which is better than 0% before.

Spent some hours testing different settings and came up with this today as I am still waiting for my SL2 (which I maybe postpone now)

Cheers, Rob

In case people are wondering…. I assume you mean the 20.0.2 update to Capture One Pro?

Hopefully, C1 now doesn't only provide a profile for the SL2 but also supports tethering! I hope it does...
