Upfront apologies if this is a daft question but clearly the M mount has 4 cams so could someone kindly tell me which Leica mounts use 3 cams please?

A 3 cam reference relates to R system lenses. Followed by 3rd cam only and then with ROM contact FWIW.

Pete, CAMS means the cams or lugs around the lens which engage with the appropriate links within the R camera body for aperture control/AE setting. I think you're looking at the lens mount itself. There are only the LTM, M, R and now 4/3 Leica mounts.

3-cam lenses are only compatible with Leica's reflex bodies unless you get an R-to-M adapter and are satisfied with guess focus.

 

There are some incompatabilities between a few of the 3-cam variations and a few bodies. The R bodies, i.e., R3 through R9, can use any 3-cam, 3rd-cam or ROM lens. It's the Leicaflexes i.e. Leicaflex Standard, Leicaflex SL, and Leicaflex SL2 that will have problems with a few 3-cam lenses.
