Guest Seb V Posted August 13, 2006 Share #21 Posted August 13, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, I don't have any experience with the 24mm but I have had the 28 f2.0 for nearly a year now. It is a fantastic lens. I will stick my neck out and say it's the widest focal length possible for portraiture without making people appear distorted. The colours are magical, no vignetting and superb indoors with available light. See Nan Goldin's pictures with this lens, some of them are really beautiful. Crucially, when comparing it with the 24mm, note that the 28 has it's own set of framelines in the standard .72 viewfinder. I haven't tried it but I would hate to have to focus with one veiwfinder and then compose with a seperate one in the hotshoe. Seb
Advertisement Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Hi Guest Seb V, Take a look here 24 2.8 or 28 2.0?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted August 13, 2006 Share #22 Posted August 13, 2006 According to the French mag 'Réponses Photo' (# 174, sept. 2006), the frame lines of the M8 could be 24, 28, 35, 50, 75 and 90mm.
marknorton Posted August 13, 2006 Share #23 Posted August 13, 2006 That makes sense because the 24 activates the 35/135 frame lines in the M6/M7. That would make the frame pairs 28/90, 24/35, 50/75. Still leaves the 21mm out in the cold but that might tie in with an aux finder for the rumoured 16-18-21 Tri-Elmar which would match the existing 21/24/28 aux finder. So all they will have had to do is change the masks, set the magnification and add "digital" focal length markings to the aux finder.

I'm with you on that one, having taken many portraits with this focal length indoors in my SLR days. It made for a very intimate portrait-shooting experience, and you could see that in the results. Oddly enough, even though I find Leica optics no less than glorious, I can't seem to like the results of the 28mm 'cron. I'll check out those photos you mention, though. Got a link? Less romantic than a laser RF with LCD frame lines though...
Guest Seb V Posted August 13, 2006 Share #26 Posted August 13, 2006 K.P. No link but her book The Devil's Playground has mostly 28mm images. She shoots with an M6 and 28mm Cron. Leica gave her an M7 as payment for an assignment and she killed it while swimming with it to get shots of her subject swimming! She said it was worth it for the shots. Some people can take or leave her - I think she's great. Seb

lambroving Posted August 13, 2006 Share #28 Posted August 13, 2006 Seb, Missed you at our little gathering in London. Were you on holiday? http://www.leica-camera-user.com/customer-forum/2231-official-william-ron-sighting-thread.html Agree with you completely about the fingerprint of the 28/2. Even LCT, the bokeh maven, loves it. Can't imagine what K.P. is thinking... Wish my 35/2 ASPH had similar light management.

Guest Seb V Posted August 13, 2006 Share #31 Posted August 13, 2006 William I was indeed on holiday. I spent a week in Scotland teaching my 8-year old girl how to flyfish. Shot lots with 28mm. Will scan some prints soon. The meet sounded like fun. Regards Seb
lct Posted August 13, 2006 Share #32 Posted August 13, 2006 LCT, does the article in 'Réponses Photo' say anything else new about the M8? No, nothing interesting but they plan to give "full details" and to show pictures of the M8 in their next issue (mid-September).
lambroving Posted August 13, 2006 Share #33 Posted August 13, 2006 Seb, Look forward to the pix. Hope you got some of your daughter too. Sorry you missed the dinner, but James and Ade and Dave were excellent company. James will arrange something similar in the future. Sorry to have missed you. Can't image when I'll be over again. The economy stinks here and MI5 will need to teach the screeners how to profile rather than search for liquids...
leicapfile Posted August 15, 2006 Share #34 Posted August 15, 2006 Like many on the forum, I could confess to having TDM (too damn many) Leica M lenses. I'm certain however, that I could get along nicely with just three. The 50 DR, 24 ASPH, and 35 Summicron Asph. I continue to be amazed at how the 24 handles it's FOV with so little distortion. marknorton Posted August 15, 2006 Share #35 Posted August 15, 2006 I start at 21mm, skipped the 24mm and have th 28mm. Depending on what the viewfinder arrangements are with the M8 - and there was a credible report that the M8 will have a frame for the 24mm but not the 21mm - I might buy a 24. Guest leica_mage Posted August 15, 2006 Share #36 Posted August 15, 2006 The Leica Users Gallery :: Wales & Oswestry :: Anyone Afraid of Heights? William, I remember that photo, and the other with the boat that you had shown me. So far, I do not like this lens from the results I have seen. I wish I had more B&W photos to see. However, in my M set up, I think I'm going to skip 28mm, much as I love the focal length. It'll propbably look something like this: 21 - 35 - 50 (x2) - 75 - 90.
