afh714 Posted July 13, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Someone tell me if waiting four months for warranty repair on your Leica digital camera is excessive. I have a repair estimate from Leica in Allendale, NJ, dated 3/30/07 informing me that replacement of the chip on my camera will be covered by warranty, no charge. That's wonderful. But I'm still waiting for the camera. is this normal for Leica? Regards, afh

marknorton Posted July 13, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 13, 2007 All the evidence is that Leica Service is overrun. First it was the M8 recall, then it was lens codings, then it was Digilux 2 sensor replacements, then M8 and lens focussing alignment issues. Then add in a shortage of parts even for recent cameras like the M7. Finally, factor in the time it takes to train someone to do anything in this area and you have a recipe for long lead times... rsh Posted July 13, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 13, 2007 My 50 Summilux Asph has been gone for the same amount of time as your M8. My M8, 2 Months, and a 100 ApoMacro, 3 Months. I am just waiting, but I am not desperate as I use the Noctilux or TriElmar when I have a need for the 50 and the V-lux or D-Lux 3 when I want to use Digital. All will come back in my lifetime. I know that Leica is doing all it can under the circumstances.
fotografr Posted July 13, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 13, 2007 All will come back in my lifetime. I know that Leica is doing all it can under the circumstances. You mean, in your "expected" lifetime. Better start knocking on some wood. ;-)

As many others here, I use my equipment to earn a living and these delays for us are intolerable. If this happened with Canon (my current other system) or Nikon (my previous other system), I would dump them on the spot and buy from a competitor. If Zeiss had a digital system out now, Leica would be in serious jeopardy because of these problems.
sdommin Posted July 13, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I waited for three months to have my Digilux 2 CCD replaced. I thought that was excessive, so I wrote them an email asking for an update. I got no reply, so after 4 days I re-sent the email. Still got no response. Just as I was thinking about what my next step would be, I received my Digilux 2 back, in perfect shape with the new CCD (see my other post on this subject). Maybe my emails got them going (or maybe not).
roydonian Posted July 14, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 14, 2007 As I reported in another posting, my Digilux 2 went off to Leica on Feb 10 to get its crumbling aperture and focus markings replaced. It finally returned in late June. I’m a journalist, and faced with the need to cover a major trade show in mid-June, I had to buy a new digital camera to take the place of the non-available Digilux 2. Reluctant though I was to move from Leica - the marque I've used for more than 40 years - I finally opted for a Nikon D200 DSLR. Now that my D2 has finally returned, it feels so inferior in build quality to the D200 that I suspect it will in future be used only for work (I'm a print journalist, so picture-taking is a secondary role), or for other occasions when I need a fairly lightweight camera. It could be argued that I'm not comparing like with like, but the pricetag of my D2 was 2/3 that of the D200 and its pro-grade 17-55mm f2.8 lens. If I'd opted for a D3, I'd have paid almost as much as I did for the Nikon combo. Best regards, Doug
