What would be a "really good" macro lens and adapter for the SL?  I am looking to get to half live size or maybe even life size if possible.

I was thinking about the R 100mm APO f2.8 but I tried one with the Novoflex R adapter and the lens wouldn't focus at all with that adapter.

I suspect that many of you have excellent solutions to the macro/SL issue and I would look forward to reading anything you would like to share.

Thanks

The R 100mm APO f2.8 with the Novoflex R works very, very well - and you get 1:1 magnification with the ELPRO adapter. You have to focus manually, with SLs focus magnification activated.

Excellent - I was not aware of the focus magnification.  Thanks for your help!

Only current production full frame lens are Macro Elmar M 90mm and 120mm lens for S system. First can be used as manual focus and require M-L adapter while second can be auto focused via appropriate S-L adapter.

Both APO Macro Elmarit R 100mm and Macro Elmarit R60mm are legacy lenses, I can warmly recommend both as top performers however it makes me wonder is future of SL system outside current focal range of 16-280mm without a hint of specialist lens or telcomvertor dependant on legacy and third party lenses.

There are many potential 1:1 macro options for the SL 601

Yesterday I tried a recently serviced Canon FD 200/4 Macro lens which focuses to 1:1

I just bought back an Elmarit 60 R, which I had earlier, but now I use it on the SL. It’s a very good macro lens, 1:1 handheld is no problem, but the great plus of this lens is that it’s such a good standard lens too. You can do street with it and in the meanwhile doing a macro shot you happen to encounter on your walk. The AME 100 R is fantastic but quite a carry. The APO Extender 2x is not that ridiculously expensive anymore as 15 years ago and that makes a terrific 120mm with extra macro possibilities in combination with 60, where it’s still not a heavy set. For around €1000 I find I have a perfect, handy, macro solution.

The 35-75/4.0 R could be a solution too, seems to have good macro, but that’s 4.0...

For something much smaller and lighter, consider the Macro-Elmarit-R 60 f2.8. It is a great all-around lens with macro capability. It is a 2:1, but you can use the Elpro with this lens as well.

Leica made several variations of extension tubes intended for the half- to full-life size range.  Catalog #14198 and 14256.

The 35-75/4 R, as well as the Contax 35-70 f3.4 Vario Sonnar T*, are both fine lenses. I happen to have both - they are quite similar - albeit not at the level of the Macro 60 R or Macro 100 R.

I bought a Canon EF 2.5/50mm Macro and I was pleased to see that the autofocus worked very well with the Novoflex SL/EOS adapter. Not very fast and a bit noicy, but it worked and there were no misses. This lens focuses to 1:2. I only did a few shots and cannot form any definate opinion about the optical quality, but I note that many users praise this lens. My seller had used the lens purely for professional work (food photography).

I paid €100 for a used (but mint) lens. A life size or 1 : 1 adapter is available. I have not got it so if the autofocus still works with this accessory, I don`t know.

For modest macro the native both zooms can be equipped with  an achromat - I use a Marumi 5 diop 77mm with a step down adapter, because this 77 mm are the maximum available diameter from Marumi.  With the exeption of below around 30 mm focal length the IQ is very good, of course there are restrictions as with every achromat regarding small region where focussing is possible - but the autofocus works. And this solution is a very cheap one.

Other macro lenses I use with the SL together with the Novoflex adapter are the following :

Canon EF 100 mm Macro (non L)

Canon EF 180 mm Macro

Canon MP-E 65.

The last one is a very special lens, which allows magnification from 1:1 up to 5:1 and has no AF at all, not even with Canon cameras. The 100 mm does often not work with AF. The 180 mm does, but rather slow and sometimes it pumps - but it even works together with a 1,4 converter I use occasionally and with AF. IQ of all this lenses with the SL is excellent.

That is not macro photography, pseudo-macro at best.

I stick the Canon Close-Up Lens 500D in front of the Summicron-SL 75 lens and get this. Sorry, hand held and focus not perfect but you get an idea what's possible.

Leica SL

APO-SUMMICRON-SL 1:2/75 ASPH.
ƒ/2.0  75.0 mm 1/160  ISO 320
